No the 7mm won't work. Cut them at the highest point possible. If you feel like measuring, measure the length from bottom of cartridge to top of nubs. Measure strut and add 1/2".

It's also the reason why I'm not going with tom and jason and getting the 6 spd kit. My luck would be that I invested $5k on the built trans, someone hits me, and the most anyone will want to pay would be $1500 for the trans.

I support the hell out of vendors for parts for our cars. Mostly ZZP, TTR, and Powell because fast shipping and quick answers are important to me and they all deliver. Powell has material or fabricator hold ups from time to time but they still respond to emails when you ask what is going on. I've bought things from OTTP and as long as they have your stuff in stock and they get it in the box everything is alright. If there is a problem that needs addressed their response can be less than satisfactory. That's just my experience. If they answered emails a little better I would be much more inclined to consider them first.
That said these inserts were not something I was even planning on buying. But had them brand new for $250 so I jumped on what I saw as a good opportunity. I have my old FE1 struts sitting around that I am not afraid to hack up. I didn't realize this mod required proprietary information from the vendors. Once I get a hold of a spring compressor it seems fairly straightforward.

Yeah it looks like I just cut the very top of the strut off. The picture helps more than anything and I appreciate that. I honestly didn't realize this isn't a mod that people typically do themselves.

You guys always answer my questions quickly no matter how annoying/stupid. That and the willingness to take care of a problem, should it arise, might seem trivial but are very important to me as a customer. That's really all it takes to win me over.

John still has great parts but as of 2 months now I have never received a email back from john about purchasing parts.
Went to ZZP to purchase parts, will never, ever do that again. ANY SHOP THAT OFFERS PERFORMANCE PARTS MUST HAVE A PHONE TO CALL AND SPEAK TO A WARM BODY. ZZP DOES NOT HAVE THAT.
