Question for ALL who have lowered SS S/C cars

I had my lowering springs put on the other day and I am now experiencing the mystery "clunk" that seems to be quite normal for the Cobalt.

Has anyone tried replacing the front sway bar end links to get rid of the clunk?

I had the same clunk in my old Matrix after I lowered it and it turned out to be the sway bar end links that needed to be replaced.

I have a new set ordered from BWoody Performance and I should have them in a couple of weeks. I will keep everyone updated on what happens once they are installed!

My buddy and I don't know of this clunk that you speak of? I never cut the front bump stops so sometimes that the only thing that normally clunks unless I am really missing something.

It sounds like a front strut is blown. But it is actually the front sway bar end links that are loose. We found on on the passenger side of my car was loose, so I figure that the one on the driver's side is the same.

I think the clunk that you speak of is coming from the stock struts... Mine does it too. The car has been lowered for a year now at about 18,xxx miles put on since the springs.

Really? Wow that sucks. I am still going to replace the sway bar end links anyways since they are ordered and see if it makes a difference.

I have hit the bumpstops and that is a LOUD bang.....this sounds a lot more like a bad front strut.

I think its bc the strut is completely compressed so your getting a dead end sound. Theres no fix for that w/a lowered car. There arent any aftermarket struts out yet for these cars.

Yeah there are, Koni makes them but they are like 350 shipped for the fronts or backs only, so your looking at like 700 for struts

We only have struts in the front so it would be $700.... I can put that money into something more worth while bc the noise doesn't get on my nerves enough to go blow $700.

My downpipe/cat was warped (dealer thinks due to winter and watershocking of hot metal). The warped DP was causing the cat to clank off of the front sway bar when the engine torqued back under throttle. Check the clearance on your DP/sway bar. Solved my problems. I really, really thought it was coming from one of the struts too..it was not. Give it a shot man.

Can you back up these claims? How is the ride with them? How long have you had them so far? Also, do you have any pics with them on the car?

Yes I know a lot of questions there... I appreciate any that you have answers for. Thanks!

I really like the springs. Great ride quality, and a great looking drop as well and it is exactly what they claim. Unfortunately I do not have any pictures yet, but I will see if I can get some posted today.

My car has been lowered on Sportlines on the stock shocks/struts for almost all 41,000 miles I've driven the car. No telling how bad of shape my stock shocks/struts are in.... I know my camber is way off, and I'm ordering some SPC camber bolts and getting a full 4-wheel alignment this month though.

No worries!! I highly recommend buying them. And if you want a good deal...order them from www.neverenoughauto.com

Great price and fast delivery. They did not have any in stock when I ordered, so Ksport sent them from the factory directly to me. Great service!!

I am pretty sure it is not my stock struts that are causing the sound. I should be getting my new sway bar end links either today or next week, and I will get them on as soon as the weather permits!!

UPDATE:

I finally received my new sway bar end links from Bwoody and put them in today. The "clunk" that I had is now completely GONE!!!!

So I highly recommend if anyone is having the exact same problem to change out your sway bar end links. It is easy to do (took me about 45 minutes total), and not that expensive either (around $100 US).

I did take a picture of the finished product....I just do not have access to photobucket here at work, so the picture posting will have to wait!!

We'll prolly get those sway bar end links done soon if we can get some interest for them.

The stock links really sucks...
