Wheel Bearings.

So my driver side wheel bearing is going kaput. I was wondering what i need to do to fix it. I have heard you have to replace the whole hub, and I have heard you can just do the wheel bearing? Thoughts? Whats true/or better.

How do you know when it's bad? Small squeaks from a dead stop?

If its only during a turn it is most likely going to be an axle and not a wheel bearing. Do you feel a popping sensation as well?

Howling could possibly be from road noise as well as tire noise. Wheel bearings would be a constant thing regardless of dry pavement, wet, concrete roads or any other conditions. It would also not go away and then come back. Normally is starts during highway speeds(70-60mph) and then eventually continues down to just regular city driving (30-45).

Nope no popping sensation, do you mean axle bearing? Or the axle itself?

To know if it's a bad wheel bearing, It will be a solid "Hum", If you turn right and it stops it's the right bearing, If you turn left and it stops it's the left bearing. When you turn toward the bad hub you're transfering the weight away from the bad bearing, making it stop humming.

Hey, sorry to thread jack, but what does it mean when you have a "popping" noise when making turns? I have the "popping" noise and kind of a grind both in the right front when turning.

That sounds like strut bearings..

Low speed noise during a turn would most likely be the axle itself or as stated above the strut. Your best bet would be to jack up the passenger side of the car, grab the tire, and try and rock the wheel back and forth and side to side. If there is excessive play, more than likely it is the bearing. If it appears to be fine, take the tire off and check the axle for a damaged boot or grease leaking. Normally it will leak grease before going bad but axles can still fail with grease still inside.

Rocking the wheel back and forth wont show any play sometimes with bearings, I did that test and had no play, but it was still bad.

I figured it would be at least a place to start to do a self diagnosis of some sorts instead of throwing parts at a problem but ya I have run into the same issue where it didn't show anything and it was a noise. Then again I said excessive play which means hes been riding around with the problem for a few months not caring lol. Either way I hope what we have said helps him out a bit

This is true, to a point. I have been riding on this problem for a while now, but i really do care and i feel bad, but i really don't have the time to have the problem looked at or fixed because i work 40-50 hours a week and am a full time college student.

SORRY FOR THE THREAD JACK dragon, but I also think I have a wheel bearing problem which is why I'm here in the first place.
