Wheel stud problem? Need advice SS/SC

Hi I have a SS/SC and I tear up the San Diego canyons pretty much every weekend. My first tire rotation (7 months ago) two of my lug nuts were stripped So I thought okay i will deal with it. But I recently got my tires checked again and three more lug nuts were stripped and three wheel studs ruined. The shop said that my Cobalt is the only one that has this problem.

Are my wheel studs to cheap or soft that they are heating up to much during my aggresive driving and causing my lug nuts to become seated? Is there anybody out there with this same problem?

Will new cross drilled rotors may cool down the studs? (I still have my original rotors on...they need to be replaced)

Thanks Everybody

No way this should be happening; maybe if the nuts are cross threaded, too loose or too tight. Torque wheel nuts to 100 ft. lbs. Always torque your wheel nuts....impacts are deadly...

i have been in the shop everytime and I can guarantee they were not cross threaded. Three other lug nuts had a hard time coming off but the threads were okay. I dont know about next time I take them off though.

most likely the shop ******* them up when they put them back on after their rotations and what not. I used to work at America's Tire and we'd **** **** up all the time with the impact wrenches. If you dont thread them on by finger first or use a torque stick attached to the impact wrench you can tear up a stud pretty easy.

Every last one of my lug nuts went on hard when I first got my car. It seams they where just softer then other lugs and got the threads pulled a little. I know its was the lugs because I replaced the originals with an aftermarket set and they thread right on no problem.

What kind of aftermarket lugs did you get?

Sounds strange to me. I've put 95K on my 06 SS and still have the original studs and I'm swapping wheels almost every weekend during the summer autocrossing...

After you get them rotated, are you checking them again after about 100 miles or so?? They can back out a bit and that might cuase problems...

I do all my rotations myself and hand tighten them until they have good thread egngagement, then take a bar to them, and torque them to 100 lbs/ft.

I've had a couple that were tough to break loose over the past 2 years, but nothing major.

If you're getting excessive heat in them, they could be fusing to each other, but I doubt that.

Maybe time to upgrade to a good competition grade wheel stud or something. ARP or someone should make something that would work.

Question

You are probably right they may have backed out a bit and then fused. It seems no one else has this problem but me.

No i never checked them and didn't know about the 100 lbs. torque. I'm going to look for a good torque wrench this weekend. Thanks for the help. I thought you had to retighten them when you get oversized rims or spacers. But that info is good to know. I will probably go buy some stock studs then and replace the bad ones.

Did you upgrade the lugs?

use moly lube {arp stuff} on each stud. make sure you have the right lugnuts on there the first time.

I had to get longer studs for the Solstics wheels I was using (which require wheel spacers), and I found that the Dorman part # 610-323 was a perfect replacement. It was long enough to get the wheels on with the spacers, but not too long that I can't go back to original tires/wheels with the same lugnuts. For your purposes, they look like they are a much better alloy. I have had to replace one factory stud in the past because its threads got jacked up, so I can see where the OEM studs are most likely the weakest link. BTW, I ran a track day at Hallett (a road track in OK) pretty hard on these Dorman studs, and I had no problems and everything looks and feels great on the track.
