XXX bar on the street in an emergency situation?
XXX bar on the street in an emergency situation?
I hate to be a buzz kill, but I ordered the xxx bar back in march, and I have yet to put it on. To be honest I am never going to auto x, I just want a bar to help free up my car (neutral). Race tracks are much more controlled environments than back roads. Let's say Im out having fun one night on some winding roads with the xxx bar on, I'm mid corner and see a deer in the road, I lift the throttle and hit the brakes, will my ass come around? The reason I think this is because I saw this video (scroll down you'll see it)
So you want oversteer on your FWD - Suspension and Brake Forum - j-body.org - the jbody organization
He was on cold race slick tires
Will the xxx bar overseers more or less if I am on cold street tires as compared to cold race slicks. Basically in an emergency which is safer the xxx bar or the street bar?

That thread hurts my head.
Anyways, as long as you're using reasonable street tires, the car is very forgiving, even on the hardcore bar, but if you use star specs, rs3, or any of those uber sticky street tires, you will be hunting for grip when it's under 45F. Still, you have to be driving awfully fast to make the car slide, and you shouldn't be triggering ESC in the first place on the street. I've never once had the car do anything *THAT I DON'T EXPECT* on the stock tires and hardcore bar, or the XXX bar on the street.
If you don't autox/track, then there's no reason for the XXX bar. The video shows someone that didn't correct fast enough when the car started to slide. That's it. Did it happen earlier because of the tires? Sure, but it was fixable very early on by getting on the gas hard and steering faster than he did. Honestly, most folks can't even tell the car is sliding til it's too late. Don't have the experience? Fine, don't set it up more aggressively.

Thanks Wangspeed. I was thinking that, but wasn't sure. I think I'm going to sell my xxx bar and get the street bar. If I ever do go auto x and get some experience then I might pick up the xxx bar again.
Don't do that, you will just be wasting money. Just don't over drive your car. Easy enough.

Just realized that was that HB TC guy or whatever his name was. Here's another interesting one:Crash at GIR - YouTube
The biggest thing I notice on this one is you can see the tach from 3500rpm and you can see the needle falling as soon as he gets loose. Also see the speedo through the other turns and it's falling mid turn. Still feel for him, it could happen to any of us.

You guys are wrong. Jboogie is right. The guy keeps lifted and was slow to counter. Rumble strips are meant to be driven over. Hell, sometimes the best line involves the dirt or pavement on the OTHER side of a rumble strip. The only kind I avoid are the giant alligator ones with sharp big drops that eat suspension and alignments. Just grooved or smooth? Run them the hell over and get on the gas.
Want a hint that it works? Look at all the rubber on them.

Thou shalt not lift when correcting in a FWD car, okay maybe a little, but never all the way off. Here's me understeering off. I knew as soon as I tried to turn that it wasn't gonna work. I do not lift as I'm sorting it out. In the beginning of the vid you can also hear going over a rumble strip. One of them at a different part of the track causes me to catch a little air.

The first correction has to come quick. The next one has to be even faster, lest you overcorrect and shoot off to the other side.

I have an XXX bar and have no problems with it. just us a little common sense and you'll be very impressed with the XXX. No swaybar is too much; it's only drivers who have too little smarts! Unless you're absolutely driving at the limit of adhesion, not likely unless you have autocross or track experience and know just how fast you can really go (and none of us do it on "street tires"), you won't have any problems.

I did a pretty wild "possum avoidance maneuver" about a month ago. I was driving to work at around 5am in the fog and for some reason I had already turned ESC off, I don't normally but I'm glad I did. I was only about a mile from my house on cold tires, he was dead center of the lane and I didn't see him until I was about 15 feet away. Went sideways, got squirlley, counter steered and hard on the gas. It's funny cause it's all just muscle memory once you do it all the time.
There's more to it than just that though. You can cut the chicane straight since there was no one around. The counter and gas weren't there. Gotta know if you're entry speed is too fast the instant you turn in, because there's still time to do something about it. Looks like you were slow to counter/gas, and looped it to the inside of the turn.

Hindsight is always 20/20.
