Cooling Additive Comparison...article by Turbo Mag

Cooling Additive Comparison...Good Reading from Turbo Mag
Here's some reading I came across that might be of help since temps are starting to warm-up and summer time heat is going to start to affect the performance of my cSS.

Turbo Magazine did some decent testing on some of the Cooling Additives out there for radiators. Here's just another reason why DEI's radiator relief is the way to go.

http://www.turbomagazine.com/feature...t_results.html

AND they even got some coolant for our blowers...

very interesting read, can we just throw in some redline into our cooling system or do we have to remove something first?

problem with redline and purple ice (not listed) is that they foam up quite a bit - next time your in auto parts store grab a bottle and shake it up. DEI's claim to fame with Radiator Relief is that it has the same properties as Water Wetter but it performs better because of the anti-foaming agent.

Plus in the article, it beats Water Wetter even though it was a much hotter day.

It looks like Justice Brothers and DEi were pretty close.
They did say Justice brothers was the best though.

"Justice Brothers' Radiator Cooler takes the lead".

"Radiator Relief still outshone the competition with the lowest cylinder head temperature and by far the lowest idling temperature".

all the additives say they can be added to any mixture as is, just drain some coolant to make room.

BUT, they all say for optimized results flush the system using an approved cleaning product to break down any mineral and scale deposits and then formulate the appropriate mixture.

I found this cleaning product from DEI - http://designengineering.com/products.asp?m=sp&pid=61

In regards to that, what mixture do you use?

During the summer I run straight water and Radiator Relief. The directions say one that one bottle is good up to 16 quarts. I also use the Chill Charger additive for the SC.

I've worked on performance cars since I was a kid and the cooling system is just one of those things people wait to upgrade (using either additives or larger rads) last even though it's probably one of the most important upgrades.

This will probably be the best $9 (per bottle) you'll ever spend.

DEI (called them) says that Radiator Relief is an all-year-round product that remains in a cooling system for up to 8 months on a performance engine. There was an article out there that tested WW under extreme use and found it "virtually" non-existant within 6 months vs. DEI Radiator Relief which lasted 2 months longer. It was in a drift magazine (still looking).

If you think about it, those motors are beat during events.

Apparantly one of the ion redline forums has a group buy discount on DEI - bottle of each would run $6.40 (plus shipping).

I spend so much time in the sound where it rairly if ever hits freezing that I just run my stuff 80% Distilled/20% Antifreeze. Get a 5 gallon jug and pour in a 1g bottle of antifreeze. Pour in a bottle of Water Wetter and then top off with Distilled. I would always pour distilled into the antifreeze jug and shake it up to get it all out. That way I could keep a filled 1g jug ready for top-offs.

Something else that helps is using a cooler thermostat. 190 or 200 degree instead of the 210 stocker.

anyone have anything to add to this. Im looking into getting something along these lines for just a lil cooling for over the summer but dont wanna worry about flushing the system in the winter and change the mixture at all.

Call me lazy but pour in bottle and go in what Im looking for.

thanks to BennyB on car domain for getting me this video file illustrating the difference in the "foam factor" of DEI Radiator Relief compared to Water Wetter - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCeXwAA95oY

I have to agree with a lot of what is being said and I emailed DEI with this thread and here is the response Mark over at DEI gave me -

(1) WW is an alcohol based additive that has a tendencey to evaporate. You are right as it will work in 50/50 or more concentrated anti-freeze mixtures but (2) DEI Radiator Relief is a water based product that doesn't foam up while still providing the anti-corrosion.

People don't realize that they can keep their engine temps running cooler in the summer if they drain about a gallon of the anti-freeze mixture and replace it with water. It'll give them a 70/30 to 80/20 water/coolant mixture which is when Radiator Relief works best (remember it is water based).

If you live where you don't have to worry about freezing cold temps then you're in good shape as Radiator Relief won't break down and evaporate like WW which is usually within the first 3 months. DEI Radiator Relief was found in a mixture way longer (10 months) with a 85% percent concentration rate - so even if you live where it's cold just set a reminder in your email or on your cell phone calender to drain a a gallon in the fall and add in the anti-freeze. You'll still have more Radiator Relief in your overal mixture in the winter to help fight corrosion than you would if you used the alcohol based WW.

yea, i remeber the older stuff did when i got it for my truck but that's when it came in a bigger white bottle (1 year ago) It almost reminded me of what a bottle of kids bubbles looked like after you shook it up (old stuff) - Ben from cardomains forwarded me his cell phone vid - it foamed up for like 3 secs before it was gone - http://youtube.com/watch?v=uCeXwAA95oY

he and his buddy have sc grand prix with similar mods and both have water temp gauges from Cyberdyne so it'll be interesting to see what they come up with.

here's a pic from summit racing...

i just mixed in a small bottle of water wetter in with the coolant when i did the dual pass, i dont wanna worry about flushing the system in the winter either, we figured a small bottle mixed with the coolant wouldnt hurt, that with the dual pass i run about 20 degrees colder at wot compared to a few with a similar setup and pulley size in my area.

..you know, soap removes the viscosity of water too.....i wonder if you use that in summer if it would foam (like dove soap bar, not washing detergent or anything)

they all work about the same in my opinion but its said that with redline and purple ice (which arent on the poll) supposively foam alot more...i went to the local pep boys and just grabbed a bottle of watter wetter for like $5-6 and im happy with it

o and from first hand i know that watter wetter hardly foams at all ive shaken it up to see before and it might a tiny little bit or not at all
