Does MAF read Voltage first then convert to Frequency?

Just like the title says. What type of MAF do we use? One that reads Voltage first and then converts to frquency? Or does it read and output purely in frequency?

Thanks.

I read somewhere the output is a square wave freq. Don't quote me on that though.

You're correct. However I need to know if the sensor reads votage and the box that it's connected to within the sensor converts it into a frequency or the sensor reads frequency and simply relays it back to the ECU.

Why are you going to try and run the SAFC type of device on your car, because if you are it will not work. one of the local 2.2 ions around here tried running one and messed his car.

I've been trying to get my AEM FIC installed and I need a way around the MAF outputting only frequency.

Either I need to know if the sensor reads voltage or I'm going to have to use a digital to analog converter.

I did just a little research it looks like the maf is current driven. Current is passed thu the sensor heating it and as it cools from the air passing thru you get a change in current. The output of this current is used to change the freq.

Using ohms law, the resistance of the element changes as it cools, if your resistance increases your current drops and the voltage, theortically, should stay the same.

I called AEM directly and asked a technician about the use of the FIC on my 2005 Cobalt.

Question: Is the Cobalt 2.2L MAF Frequency based or Voltage based?

Answer: The tech believes that the cobalt should use a 0-5V sensor and doesn't understand where I got the idea that it uses a frequency based sensor.

Question: I asked if the FIC was tested on a Cobalt SS or 2.2L

Answer: The FIC was tested to work on the 2.2L

Question: I asked if it can function with the MAF hooked up then can I still run the controller without hooking up the MAF.

Answer: yes the only function that will be lost is MAF Clamp.

In accordance with the above information from AEM I'm going to by pass the MAF all together and see what I get this weekend.

Update: I tried switching the MAF from percentage mode to Voltage mode as suggested by AEM tech but no luck. I'll have to bypass this weekend.
