tuning for 2.2? my auto performance shop says "yes!"

When I asked my local auto performance shop about tuning for an 07 Cobalt LT with the 2.2L, they claim they can tune it!
I thought everyone said there was no tuning for the 2.2?

How do you usally benefit from a tune? What's involved? And how does this effect engine life?

07's Have a different ECU than the 05-06's so yea there is tunning avaliable (i believe).

Unless and even if you have intake, exhaust you arnt going to get much out of it. If you threw in the 2.4 intake manifold into the mix then you will have someting.

I would like to know they plan on tuning it since, as far as I know, tuning is not yet available for the 2.2L.

If they were able to tune it, you might get a little extra horsepower. If it is done correctly, it should change the life of the engine. If it is done poorly, you engine will die sooner.

You also should remember that you have a choice between gas milage or power, not both.

For 05-06 the only way you can "tune" your car is to use a piggy back which will work but not as well as an actual tune. Plus with that there is no way to hide form your dealer that you have messed with you ECU if your concerned about that.

There is a canned Turbo tune for the 05-06 Manual cobalts, that's all I know/care about.

Yes it does have different ECU, and no there is not tuning available for it. They are waiting on HPtuners to release the capabilities b/c the new ECU is similar the the 2.4/2.0 but nothing has been released yet.

And the flash that comes with the 2.2 Turbo kit from Garrett will not work on the 2.2, there is a member on here with and 07 that bought the kit & found out the hard way it wouldnt flash

So, basically there is a reflash for the 05-06 Turbo kit, and no tuning for the '07 2.2

Then how come a sponsored Vendor of this site is telling me there definetly is tuning????

edit: I'm not naming names, I'm sure you can figure out who, these guys are very reputable, which is why it's confusing me so much.

edit2: When you're getting 27mpg you can sacrifice a few miles for more power lol (Just moved up from my modded 05 Equinox that got 12mpg!!)

There is no tuning for the 07 2.2 yet. The ECU used in the cobalt is used in other cars that i believe are supported by HPTuners, thats why people believe within the next couple releases the 07 2.2 should be included.

The 05-06 2.2 aka E16a ECU is supported by SCT. The have a canned tune you receive with the Garrett Alpha kit. I am currently trying to find out from a dealer, who just traveled to florida to visit SCT's new headquarters, whats actually going on with it. If we can only get a custom tune done or can we buy their tuning software similar to HPTuners and tune ourselves. I will be calling the guy back today about it since he was supposed to be back from florida by now.

Sw4y, you need to give me a nice how to and list and maybe prices or links to all the work you've done.

I'm hoping within 1-2 years to have a full turbo setup on my Cobalt, hoping to run 12-14s in the 1/4mile

Well the turbo kit you could easily build yourself for about the same or less then what i got mine for. ~$2700. I put a 3" custom mandrel bent exhaust for $400 and was running the Perfect Power SMT-6 piggyback. I know the SMT-6 will work with your car, but i would recommend the AEM Fuel/Ignition Controller. Its perfect for anything from 200-320whp. If your going to be within the 200-250whp range, go with 42lb injectors. You can then replace your stock injectors with the 42lb'ers and the car would run just like normal(by using the AEM FIC to reduce the pulsewidth to the larger injectors). You can then use it to tune your car while its NA by richening it up a bit under WOT, or you can wait till you throw a turbo on. Once the turbo is on, you can use the FIC to add fuel and pull timing under boost only. I have about 90% of the FIC's wiring diagram finished for the 05-06 2.2's, but not 07. If you can get me a pinout of the 07 ECU, i could make some changes for the 07.

Awesome. I would rather not run piggyback if I didn't have to, but if it's the only option then I'll do it.

I just can't get over this shop telling me twice they can definetly tune an 07 Cobalt LT 2.2...
