05 SS/SC vs. 01 Camaro

ok is it just me or are these things just dogs... the stock v8 camaro just doesn't seem that fast to me... yes this one was an auto, but still... anywho... just got thru with the runs... we were on the deaded Valley in waco, i was out cruisin for some applications for a job and i was at a red light, and 2 lanes over was the camaro... he took off and i could hear the growl of him take off quickly from his exhaust and then of course im going to punch it also... i mean by the time i hit second i was already walking him... i caught up no time flat and i knew he was WOT... i figured it would have been more of a challenge... then after he saw my taillights, i slow down to about 40 and he come up beside me again and punches it... this time we went to about 80 (the valley speed limit is 40) and i walked him again... i still love the camaro but it did not impress me... the look on his passengers face was complete astonishment, he was just lookin at me with jaw dropped... the driver seemed pissed off... he kept trying to run me and i kept showing him the taillights...
anywho moral of this story... the cobalt is a quick little car that deserves recognition... and it's not completely smart to race to 80 in a 40 in broad daylight.... but i did it anyways...

the LS1 was crafted by the hand of God and would spank the living **** out of a cobalt ss/sc. stock LS1 > modded Cobalt SS/SC. Either it was a V6, the guy couldnt drive, or you were hallucinating. That stock V8 camaro is the best motor GM has ever put in an F-body. Its capable of 12s stock, autos more like mid 13s.

dont take this personal, it is just a fact. I can see this thread being entertaining though.

i never called bullshit, I just laid out 3 possibilities. there are more though. Tell you what, if you think LS1's aren't that fast, go over to LS1TECH.com and tell them how your Cobalt "walked" one of their own. While you're at it, look at some of the times on their sigs. Those cars run 11's with a cam and a few bolt-ons. Stock LS1s are running 1.0-1.5 seconds faster than any Cobalt Ive seen at the local track. If you really walked him and kept showing him your tailights, either you have the biggest factory freak Cobalt known to man, the guy wasnt racing or he sucked at driving, or hell just froze over because Cobalts are now faster than LS1's. Like I said, dont take it personal, its a fact.

yeah i love the cobalts.. the lsj and everything. but the LS-1 is just an amazing engine. mabey he was hauling bricks in the trunk? <~ just kidding.. but really, there had to be something wrong with that car. nothing against a cobalt (i love them) but i really think that LS-1 wasn't all that healthy.

but all in all
nice kill

I'm not backing this guy on his claim but wasn't there an article in one of the car magazines comparing our car to a new mustang GT & an older camaro w/ V8 (99 model?)? The article stated that the mustang was faster & the ss/sc was slightly faster than the camaro. Wouldn't that be the same engine as the the camaro undrgrndcobalt's refering to?

If it was an auto with 2.73s that could explain it. I drove a Z28 auto (vert) with 2.73s and it was pokey off the line but then pulled real hard.

the LT1 was pre-98, 93-97 if I remember. In 98 the LS1 was in every Z28/SS Camaro. You said 01, so it was an LS1. If you were just guessing, this will help you out: were the headlights round or where they square?

93-97 LT1: http://www.usmilitaryfinancing.net/Mvc-97Camaro-red.jpg

98-02 LS1: http://www.fedrelandsvennen.no/amcar.../01camaro2.jpg

And no, the Mustang (GT) isnt as fast as an LS1. 98-02 LS1 > 99-04 GT > 05/06 Cobalt, by stock 1/4 mile times. Not from a 40 roll

Also, theres a common misconception among SRT-4 and apparently some Cobalt owners that the LS1 is a dog in the upper rpms. That is a load of crap. They thrive in the upper rpms. If you've never driven an LS1 powered Camaro or T/A, go test drive one at a used car lot. I did and it was funny. The car didnt feel a lot faster than my GT, but I have no doubt it would smoke it.

I raced my buddy many times in his 99 ls1 auto 2:73 geared camaro before my rev it up kit with a 3.2 pulley and we were dead even everytime. He didn't shift out of second until over 100 lol. So it's possible. street racing doesn't always show the faster car if there close. I'm sure an ls1 with a 6 speed and the right driver would mop up our little cobalt. Thats why I drive a low 11 sec TA lt1 on the weekends.

My honest opinion, Auto or Stick you would have lost. Maybe you confused it for a older model with an LT1. I would even think the auto would take you off the line because I have driven both A4/M6 and the auto launches better IMHO, but I didnt know some came with 2.73's. I thought only some vettes had that lil gear in it. Ive also driven an SS/SC a few months back and not to sound mean, cause I do love that car (had one ordered before I got my GTO) but it wouldnt hang with an LS1 F-Body

Edit : Im suprised theres still a stock V8 F-Body around if thats what it was

Say what you will but no STOCK ls1 will run 12s, its a myth. Low 13s all day long but they wont crack 12s without A, tires, B minor bolt ons.

LS1 is not hand crafted by god, there are much better engines that have MUCH better power curves, the LS1 has the power curve of a Inline 4. The LS2,LS7, LT1, LT4, and Older 350s make much more power down low. (note, I didn't say torque, I said low end HP).

That combined with 2.73s in an auto and I can easily see a CSS keeping up. But keep in mind you got the slowest of them, and any modded, or standard tranny LS1 will beat you into the ground over and over again untill you have some mods.
