2.4L vs. Stang SVO
2.4L vs. Stang SVO
Today I meet up with my friend and we cruised around while they had the annual old muscle car crusie in my town. (btw, there were some SICK chevy's there)
Anyways he drives a late model 1985 Mustang SVO. It's packing a 2.3L with a turbo pushing out 6 lb's boost.( 100,000+ miles)
Im in my 2007 Cobalt SS 2.4L only performance upgrades are a GMPP intake and B&M Shift+. (3000 miles)
Anyways after the car show we decided to head home. On the home I was leading and he pulls up next to me gonig about 25mph.
We both gun it and he jumps ahead about a half a car then I reel him in and get about a half a car ahead of him by 85mph.
The second race we started from a barely roll maybe 5mph and he got a car lead, then I reeled in some more and got even with him when I shut down at 90mph.
Overall I am VERY happy with my car's performance. Although his clutch was slipping a tad. I can admit that I am surprised my car beat him like this. I thought for sure he would pull harder.
Next race he's getting a new clutch and upping his boost to 12psi. Im getting exhaust & lighter rims hopefully.

Those are acutally very rare cars only around 9500 were made total. They made 175-205 depending on year.
Good race none the less.
Hiscar sounds super badass to, You can hear the turbo spool like no other even at low rpm's. It has almost no turbo lag and its in decent shape. I really lvoe the car, to bad he wants to trade it for a trans am.
I added a picture side by sdie, we took awhile back when we were working on his car.
Also, Hahn that picture is sweet but HUGE.

Svo's don't put anywhere near 205 to the wheels. The 1986 Svo made 205 at the crank on the high boost setting, which was 12 or 14 lbs I believe. The 86 was the most powerfull of them, and ran around 15 flat in the 1/4. Don't be too impressed.
1985.5 Mustang 2.3T Specs 205 @ 5000 RPM 248 @ 3200 RPM
The Horsepower is not impressive but its has good numbers as far as torque goes.. Alot more torque than the ecotec 2.4 is making at the crank..
I'd say INDColtsFan18 did good considering at 3000 miles his motor is not fully broke-in yet..

An 85 Svo is a different model year than the mid-year 85.5. Only the 85 and a half (also known as an 86) had the 205 HP. You can tell the 86's from the earlier years by the flush mounted composite headlights. The car in the photo is unknown, as someone installed a GT fascia and ground effects.Keep in mind that the 86 had an electronic boost controller switch that ran a low boost setting (6-7 lbs) and a high boost setting (12-14) to allow the use of low and high octane gas. I don't remember if the lesser year Svo's ran the high boost setting, but judging by the fact that the OP was racing a car at 6 lbs I'd say not. OP probably raced a low 16- high 15 second car at best with a non slipping clutch.

Also note that he has a catless exhaust which should boost HP a bit
We live in Marshall which is about 45mins north of the indiana border.

good races i'm glad you showed that the 2.4l ss can beat fast cars to not just the ss/sc
,i have a 2.4l ss and i have put gmpp air intake, gmpp catback, zzp down pipe with cat and jet chip not chip but you know what mean good work
Thanks! We've had a lot of fun with the 2.4's. They are indeed worthy!
No one on here has the right to call the SVO underpowered, more power than an SS/SC over 20 years ago. SVO was an awesome car, friend of mine used to have one that ran low 11s with the 2.3. It was not underpowered for that year either, that's as much power as an 85 Buick Grand National in a lighter and more aerodynamic car. SVO Mustang>Any Cobalt/Neon

We went 10.55 @ 140 in this one, waay back in 2000. Hot Rod Magazine featured it! 100% street car...we nicknamed it 'The Humiliator' for what it did to the egos of many a musclecar owner
is that the neon that was running in the 10s with an automatic?
First time out, it went 9.88 @ 148 with the 5-speed and our off-the-shelf Neon TurboSystem with a shot of N20! First ever 5-speed Chrysler four-cylinder to go 9's.
We then put a 2.4/auto combo in it, and ultimately went 9.20's @ 155. A fun car, but very hard on transmissions
That year, we took the National #2 Plate behind Lisa Kubo in NDRA Pro Four Cylinder competition. A great season!
Still have the car...poor thing's on blocks now
Sorry for the thread jack! Seeing talk of SVO's and such fires me all up
