4-door Cobalt SS > Ls1 GTO Auto...... :hides:
So I am driving home from work minding my business but yet very eager for action since I NEVER see any. Cruisin down the highway which is pretty darn open right now I spot a bad ass lookin black GTO. Looks like aftermarket tips, rims and tint. I spot the 5.7 badge and know this could be good :secret2:
I pull by him a few times lettin off a whistle or 2 cause hey, no one screws with a low-rise spoiler Cobalt right?
Finally I get his attention and he bounces it a few times but of course now we have traffic. So he pulls behind me and my left lane is open as far as you can see. So I drop it into 3rd and wait for some kind of reaction in my rear-view (since he is so close I can see his expression). When I see him nod, I nail it and pull. Judging by how I seemed to pull away even after he nailed it, I am soooooo hoping for a line up.
Well we get more than a few:
30 roll
40 roll
60 roll
60 roll
Basically I pull a car each time and he never gains back thru about 110 or so. The best race was the low roll of course since I got to bang a few no-lift-shifts (NLF: which I freakin nailed!) His car never (not exaggeration) pulled on me. Once we hit it we stayed next to each other for .3 seconds and once I hit boost, I pulled.
He waves me over and we stop. Get to talking. He said his buddy knew I was game when they figured out my license plate but it took a little egging cause they didn't realize the 4-door SS was turbo and thought it was a body kit kind of model.....
Him: exhaust, passenger, auto
Me: removed muffler, empty car seat and a melting cake...lol
At one point he mentioned he forgot his traction control ON and how that may have caused a loss. I only asked if he spun from any of the rolls cause that would be the only issue with leaving it on but I doubt there was considering a stock, auto, passenger, etc would rarely entice wheel spin above 30mph.
These cars are so damn underrated its nuts.
Now I know why I ran a 14.3 @ 103.5.
I am pretty sure I would give a stock Lt1, GT, 370, R/T, etc some trouble from a roll. From a stop, I told him it would be rape since I mustered a horrible 2.4 sixty foot. 1st gear is almost useless in these cars and when most guys tune them, they reduce 1st gear boost to 50%.......I see why :drive:
Now remember, I have owned my ls1 for 10 years and 100,000 miles so I am fully aware of what it can do throughout its life.....one bolt-on at a time. So with that said, I love the GTO's but I just left a few guys wishing they waited for the ls2.
oh and since I mentioned that I just got off work, I got out of the car to talk in my slacks and dress shirt.........he was like WTF? I just got beat by this dude on his way home from the daily grind, car seat in the back and melting cake for the wife.......

Not really, he is probably capable of mid 13's......but these cars would do the same if they could launch. Take away the crappy launch and its a car that makes damn good power for the weight.
For example, most f-bods trap 1-2 more MPH. Not as big a deficient as most would think.

Nice kills.
As a former 5.7L GTO owner, with the right tune and headers they are capable of some decent times in the 1/4 and nice highway runners.
I was able to hit 12.7 in the 1/4 with headers, catless mids and a tune on my 04. Beat 6.0's constantly as well with some of the same mods.
With that said, they are very heavy and can seem boring... but i liked that while I owned mine. Very hidden with traffic and would snap hard if needed. A very comfortable car. I shall miss it.
Again, nice kills!
