70 chevelle ss vs 07 ss sc
70 chevelle ss vs 07 ss sc
well we raced and he beat me 3 times from a dig i missed 2nd gear the 1st 2 times bad driver mod
but got it in gear and only lost by a 1 and a 1/2 cars or so. 2 from a 40 mph roll and beat him by about 1 and a 1/2 cars both time. stxss07 was there to watch it so no bs i have a witness no video camera though
anyway i think i could have hung right with him like i did the 3rd time from a roll and was pulling hard at the end of 3rd beginning of 4th but he seen that and hit the brakes really quick. all i have done is the air box mod and the bad driver mod. should my car even hang with it the 454 in it was rebuilt 1200 miles ago. i think i might go get a dyno and take it to the track because i shoulndt have hung with him. let me know what u guys think
p.s. dont bother saying take it to the track i know i will be very soon.

ya i know i can launch my car like no other its just if i get spin or wheel hop and the rpms r going up i shift 2 second and it takes a second for it 2 get going cause i wasnt at my full rpm range in 1st b4 the shift to second
Thats sounds about right, honestly old school muscle cars aren't that fast. Those cars weighed alot more back then than they do now. Most cars back then ran 14-15+ secs and they were the fast ones, some ran better times but most didn't.
having owned one............. *check sig*.......... they are very heavy. That car must have been an auto and definately not the LS6 454. I wish I still had my 70 SS (396) but I dont. I had it for 14 years. Somethimes I feel like my 2.4 is quicker off the line. That old tank could not handle for **** either.
yeah this was wayyyyy closer than i thought it was gonna be...
i'm thinkin about racin this 454 after I get my stage 2 on monday
btw good job man...i didnt head back to b-wood cause i had stuff to take care of...but nice racin

Good race though. Considering it was "rebuilt" a short while ago, verifying the exact specifications of the motor are difficult. Its usually relatively safe to assume that some sort of modification has been done at this point, such as a cam swap, or overbore, etc.
You faired pretty well, and I never meant to come off as sounding like you couldn't hang with the car to an extent. The power to weight ratio, and limited gearing of the Chevelle vs. Cobalt all factor in, as well as driver, etc.
Down to two, as far as 454 choices go. You could get an LS5 or LS6 454. LS5 was rated at 360hp in the chevelle, LS6 was rated at 450hp. You could also get two 396's, which were either 350 (or 360 for 1970), or the L78 396 rated at 375 (which is really a 402/425hp). These were the engine options for the SS models. Malibu/Chevelles got small block options.

Anyways...Nice runs though. I always have and always will love the Chevelles, especially the 70 and older body styles.
yellowGT, look at my other post along with one of the other guys in the section talking about this upcoming race to clarify that these cars were not slow! Not to mention they were not fat pigs either. In actualty its your car (the gt500) that is a fat pig! yes, my goat is as well, but at least it has a badass interior (and I am lighter, given by only a couple hundred lbs). Although yours has a fairly stout motor though. The Chevelle's are shown to have a weight in the 3300 lb area, is that fat? They are not on a full truck frame or anything, they were still unibody cars. Those cars were fully capable of hauling ass, and if given a a good set of tires, aggressive gearing and rock crusher 4 spd, it wouldn't surpise me one bit if those 70 Chevelles could take down your GT500 in the 1/4 mile. Anyhting after that though, negative ghost rider! With sticky tires those old school BB muscle cars would run in the 11's! its all about traction when dealing with that kind of power.
In regards to this race, the motor may have been freshend but who knows the other specs of the car. it is a 35+ year old car. It could be running some weak 2.90 gear in the back, could still be the original un freshend 3 spd auto trans. One thing though is a am willing to bet if it was a 454 it was the LS5. LS6's are somewhat of a rare bird and even in auto trim would spank around a balt SS. Shoot, they would spank me and mr GT500 as well (given good tires and in good running condition). Good race though, I am still waiting to take down some old school muscle with my car, but there are still a few out there that I still can't beat that are running around on 35+ year old technology. Stage 3 455's and 426 hemi's, Cobra jets, alot of those cars with traction will put a hurting on alot of new school cars. Not to mention they just look badass! Tyler

the fastest ss in 1970 was the ls6 454 ss. it only did the quarter in 13.7...so this is a completely plausible story. those chevelles were not that fast. did anyone catch the musclecar shoot out on speed tv about a year ago? the chevelle couldnt touch the boss 429. now i dont know what was done to the car but technology will win every time.
I just dont think you quite comprehend the whole power versus traction thing. Go read my and cds00 somethings remarks on the whole situation. You are right, they only ran a 13.7 but at near a 110. That is because they were spinning on 6 inch wide non radial bias tires for half the track almost. If you had those tires on your car your so called fast 14.5 at 98 you would turn into a measly 15.5 at 90. They had over 500 ftlbs (that is very under rated!) to launch on those miniscule tires. The LS6 was the bad boy of the day, short of I believe an L88? 67 vette. The so called 450 hp was infact around 600 on the engine dyno propelling around 3300 lbs of car. Do some math there and you will come out with say 510rwhp with the conservative 15% through a 4spd and lets go heavy and say 3400 lbs, thats 6.6 lb per hp. Still slow? Thats better then the new Z06 which dyno's in the 460rwhp area and weighs 3125. Don't go opening your mouth with out checking first. Like I stated before, Slap some slicks on those cars and they were runnings 11's (the high powered BB cares were atleast) at close to 120. What will your car do with slicks? Mine would maybe run a mid 12, but would probably break a drive shaft or rear before that happens. So like I said before, I bet it was a LS5, which was barely underrated unlike its LS6 brother. From a roll it would feasible, hence the reason I said good kill. From a dig these torque monsters still have to take it easy with modern radials and feather the throttle because it will still light the tires like the 4th of july if too touchy. They have to step on that throttle like its the tail of a sleeping lion! Tyler

The only thing that I will disagree with, is that I doubt there was any sort of cam swap or overbore if the race was that close, ya know?? I would assume that a cam and/or overbore would open that motor up quite nicely.
Anyways...Nice runs though. I always have and always will love the Chevelles, especially the 70 and older body styles.

The square port heads are superior as far as all out racing configurations, and motors looking to make over 500-600hp.
All in all, I wasnt trying to be a dick, or "school" anyone. Which I may have came off as before. Like I said, good race, and the results were what I assumed given the power to weight, etc. I think both cars are equally fast, and tossing them against one another would have been really neat to see.
Chris-
Older cars with a good set of tires own.
