On my camaro i have a SS972 emblem on the fender . Seriously if it was a 454 you would have lost to about 20 cars if it was a 454LS6 90 cars the chevelle was bad cars only advantage you have is weight.

The Chevelle was a automatic if it was a manual it would own. It lost because of a Burnout how weak is that and the challenger come in last

Cool video, I sure enjoy seeing old school cars at their best. Those cars were not the extreme bad boys of the days, they were versions of them. Although I was suprosed by the Yenko, I thought it would have done alot better. Tires appeared to be stock sizes, and by how they were talking about spinning and such I am wondering if they were original spec tires too?
Anyways, i said to the OP good race, it is very feasible to the LS5. Like I have stated before, if it was an LS6 thats not how the story would have gone. Same with the other cars, that movie is showing some of the stronger runners, but not the best. If that was the case GSX's and 442's, Chevelle's and Camaro's, vette's and mustangs, cuda's and challengers would have been used. They would have had motors in them like the LS6, ZL1, stageIV 455's and Cobra Jet's, lets not forget Hemi's and the two most supposed strongest motors built in the day, the Ford 427 Cammer and the 427's from Cehvrolet (the Z11, L88, ZL1 and the ZLX were all very underrated BB). Here is a little excerpt (sp?) I found

"The "tri-power" 427 could accelerate the 1967 Corvette coupe from zero to 60 miles per hour in little more than four seconds and, when suitably tuned for drag racing (that would mean slicks, tune adjustment and maybe unbolting the mufflers), turn in 11 second, 125 mile per hour quarter mile performances, suggesting a true power output in the range of 550 horsepower." That was just the L89 Version, here is a sheet of the top few 427's (all underrated BTW)
1967 1969 L89 L71 + aluminum heads 11.00:1 435 hp (324 kW)
1967 1969 L88 L72 + aluminum heads 12.50:1[2] 430 hp (321 kW)[3]
1969 1969 ZL1 All aluminum engine with open chamber heads 12.25:1 430 hp (321 kW)[4]
1970 1977(?) ZLX L88-ZL1 hybrid 12.25:1 430(?) hp (321 kW)[
Here's a little on that rare 427 Z11

A special 427 inł (7.0 L) version of the 409 engine was used in the 1963 Chevrolet Impala Sports Coupe ordered under Chevrolet Regular Production Option (RPO) Z11. This was a special package created for drag racers, including aluminum engine and body parts and a cowl-induction air intake system, along with the 427 engine. Unlike the later second generation 427, it was based on the W-series 409 engine, but with a longer 3.65 in (92.7 mm) stroke. A high-rise two piece aluminum intake manifold and dual Carter AFB carbs fed a 13.5:1 compression ratio to produce an under-rated 430 hp (321 kW) and 435 ft·lbf (590 N·m). Only 57 Z11s were ever produced.

Actual HP is not known for ZL1, but is accepted to have exceeded that of the L88, There were advertisements that said 585 Horsepower in magazines. Like the L88 and ZL1, the actual HP was never quoted by Chevrolet. However, drag racing experience indicated that actual output was close to 650 horsepower.

It is generally accepted that the LS-6 was substantially underrated (a common practice at the time to avoid undue attention from insurance companies) and actually produced well over 500 horsepower as delivered from the factory. This notion was supported by the fact that an LS-6 powered 1970 Corvette, in full street trim (including tires), was capable of accelerating from a standstill to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in less than four seconds, and covering a standing quarter-mile in little more than 12 seconds. Top speed was well over 160 miles per hour (256 kilometers per hour).

Remember, to get motors like this there were many options that had to usually be deleted and some added. Like no power steering in some of the extreme cases, no AC, maybe add certain seats or gear ratio or something else. Does this answer some more questions people have about the tru power of the old school cars? Still think that video shoot out was with motors similar in power to the above? You be the judge, Tyler

My dad had an ls6 chevelle when he was 17 , it was his first and only brand new car he ever had/ cared to own . With slicks, 4.56's and open exhaust he ran (edit after talking to him) 12.2's in 1970 . The Ls5 454 chevelle's were torque motor's , 375 horse 396's would have been my choice over an ls5 . Most older chevelle's i hear and see around here today sound like they need to have someone work on them , they pop and break up in the higher rpm range because people let them sit all the time and most have forgot what a timing light looks like heheh.

All these people that think the LS6 chevelle was slow. You have to remember that the test's back then were done on very skinny tires on a 14'' rim . Even that tv show ran the cars in an original configuration so smoking the tires in any gear is something that you had to be careful of . Our SS/SC have traction problems with 200 ft/lbs of torque , now imagine 500 ft/lbs of torque on these 6 inch tires lol . Sometimes track numbers on these old cars can be very deceiving , so when i hear someone say these old cars aren't fast , i have to ask how many have you driven or ridden in? Original LS6 tire below .

EDIT: Sorry to the guy's who already stated what i just did, I posted after i read that the ls6's weren't that fast and skipped the rest . This is not aimed at the O.P.

i dont think anyone is saying there slow, like i said in the begning, all i ment is HP then is diffrent then HP now

also our traction issues are alot diffrent, RWD has more ability to grip then fwd, just the laws of physics say so...if we had those crap tires, the ss/sc's would be running mid to high 15's

rukkee, its all good. The more people recognizing the fact those cars were not slow and helping to get the point across the merrier! Got any pics or vids of that nova in your sig? I love all motor american cars, especially classics! The more cubes the better! Not to mention staying with a stick, thats the only way to go! On a side note, anyone ever see that pinks episode where the two brothers ran and both their cars were sticks running low tens or 9's maybe? Thats just awesome, all throttle, no bottle, row your own gears! Cheers, Tyler

Nice races. I love Chevelles.

My uncle has a 70 chevelle SS (manual, Hurst), Red with black and red int. I am heading up to get a pic sometime soon. Also has a 67 vette. He removed the 396 and dropped in a 454 (chevelle), and that was blast to drive.. But he ended up putting the 396 back in the velle. Both engines (not stock) were obviously faster than a SS/SC.

He put the 454 in the 67 vette.... its a death ride, the craziest car I have ever driven.. The 454 is a crate with some goodies.

Anyways, it was a good run, and the result is not really surprising. My 77 vette ran 16. something when new, and the SS would run rings around it in performance and handling, but remember most of those oldies are no longer stock. My 77 now runs mid 12s at around 110, and outhandles the cobalt thanks to lightweigt suspension and composite springs.
Those 70 and earlier cheveles look and sound great, but remember that when putting 10 gallons in the balt and seeing 300 plus miles range on the DIC!!!

Cheers

Richard
