I haven't done it in my current car (knock on wood), but I've done it in former cars, with equally as short a throw as the STi. It's going to happen especially if your getting tossed around in the car.

As for the lag issue, it is a big deal even in the STI when your racing one of these supercharged cars. If your RPM's are low enought they will pull you till you get the car up to 4 to 5 grand. If you look at their R&T numbers they actually have a better 5-60 number because of it.

I do agree with your other assertions, and I've seen a friend of mine pull like crazy on an SS. At the end of the run we were several car lengths ahead of the kid. For some reason he wouldn't run from the dig.

OK for me 3rd to 4th would occur at 80 mph, not sure why you would be tossed about? I have never mis- shift that change. Only time it happens in other gear throws is if I drive one of my other cars and get use to it then switch back. So ok he shifts bad lol, I don't fancy myself anything but at my age I don't rush shifts or get all caught up. I guess also because I don't try and race till some one gets killed, so I avoid rowing through my entire 6 speed. As far as the lag , have you driven a Sti? This car revs so quickly and that 5 to 60 is a magazine test, did they brake boost or rev? I really can't assume anything, and I am modded. But since your friend has a Sti do the 5-60 and get back to us. I am curious to see if it shows the mags are right. I have beaten a few other interesting cars, and if anyone is in NY area will gladly meet up to see what the SS has to offer in good fun.

i was under the impression that the term rice is used when referring to a car that someone is modifying and making it look really bad like unpainted body kits or spoilers or fenders, stupid stickers all over it, chrome door stripping stock black steel wheels with no hub cap and things of that nature, and interesting enough alot of the internal parts of the cobalt are made in japan, take off a few panels i know when i did that there were some tags on some wiring that said made in japan...

Lag in an STi is rear, the only time I get it would if I was in 4th gear doing 20mph. If the STi is in 1st gear at 5mph turbo lag is know were to be found!

How can you say you never missed a shift when your at 5k RPMs in 3rd and have to shift pretty damn quick to 4th. (So that means you have never driven an STI on the freeway.) Also before that he hit the rev limitor going 70mhp (Yes) from 6th to 4th but went into 2nd!!! That wont mess up your car? hmm...All I know is it happened, yes I would have got smoked, hell I even said it to him and we were both laughing. All I'm saying is dont roll on me or your **** will break LoL. (Maybe.)

he's busy trying to sound smart. and yes my loyalty would keep me from buying jap-crap, just because you could care less about your own economy doesnt mean i have to. maybe in your world a japanese car is a better purchase, not in mine. i could care less if chevy hated my guts and were secretly ploting my demise....still my favorite car company, i love the cars they build and nothing will change that. so go pop in "the fast and the furious" so you can do more research

No not at all, but everytime someone has a story about an STI or an RSX, they call it rice. In a fashion such as this: "SRT-4' and the SS's need to team up against Rice," or "way to kill that rice," or "that ricer was such a fool." I'm just using rice as it is Commonly defined on this board.

In my personal opinion, rice is any modification, done to any car (foreign or domestic) that has absoletely no performance benefit, but instead makes the car look faster, or better in some ridiculous way. Such as adding stickers that read "NOS" or "Noppi" or "STi" when your car is not actually using these products. Products such as spinners, huge wings (that do nothing), gauge pods, and carbon fiber are some other examples of rice.

If you are going 70mph and downshift into second you could definently do some damage. When the wheels are spinning that fast and you shift into a gear that can't turn the wheels at that speed before redline, your RPM's will surge way above redline. Becuase the wheels are whats pushing the cars RPM's and not the engine, there is no way for the car to protect itself. If you do it at a high enough speed, you could easily grenade the engine.

I'm not sure if you’re talking to me, but I'll handle your question. The point that started this debate was relevant when I first made it. The darn thing developed into this mess, but it makes for good discussion.

The point is that many of your members classify stock STi's, Evo's, and RSX's as rice. I am of the opinion that if you’re calling those cars rice, it’s like the pot calling the kettle black. The SS is the result of the popularity of the Asian tuner market, and you don't have to look hard to realize it was principally made to appeal to the young kids who are very much into this scene. That being said, in order to compete Chevy made an American version of these cars.

Quite frankly I don’t see why there is so much resistance to this idea. The Cobalt and the Neon are reactions to the cars Honda and Nissan put out. It’s no secret that companies like GM have spent years dissecting Japanese cars trying to figure out why they appeal so much to American consumers. Your car is the result of their research, and therfore it has some distinctly Japanese components to it.

OH and those Camero, Stang guys are just being nice to you. In actuality their laughing behind your back.

Heres my input. Cars are cars bottomline, and you always love your car more than any other car. Example: My Mustang pwns people and will smoke everyone. Common with Mustang owners right? Oh WAIT...That is everyone about their car! Always thinking it is faster than another. My Sentra owns, my DSM owns, my Tiburon owns, and who gives a ****? The people that are driving. Whatever who cares if it is Rice or Domestic ****. All in all it is the same thing "****"

I couldn't agree with you more! There are cars that deserve the rice term, its just silly to bust it out on anything made in Japan.

lets see, your car is FWD, 4cyl, small displacement

hrm, aside from the chevy badging its pretty damn close to every 2 door sport compact made in japan

and what do most people on this forum call sport compact cars made in japan? rice

the car is in the same class as all the cars people here call rice. so by this forum's definition, your car is rice, by mine, no.

if you wanna be one of those guys that beats down rice and calls every import car rice, go buy something american and RWD, because as PK said, driving a FWD car then calling another FWD car rice is the pot calling the kettle black

z3 fenders on a car that is not a z3. altezza lights. led windshield washer bulbs. painted wiper blades. unpainted body kits. non fitting body kits. chrome trim on side mirrors. autozone spinners. autozone wheels. eibach spring stickers, when the guy cut his own springs. dual exhaust look on a car that cant support duals. 6" muffler. 6" muffler with "silencer" for that classic bumble bee sound. type r badges on basically anything. missing chunks of the body kit (hit a curb i guess?), steering wheel cover. 'nos' seat covers/floormats, headlight strobes...

those are a few others pk..yes, they were all on one car we saw at the mall here

Woah there cowboy maybe I misread that part but lol never driven the Sti on a highway?HMM ok that first of all is my favorite shift at anything between 50 and 80 mph, and if you have ever driven a Sti the linkage is so tight the shifter snaps back into neutral position easily. So from 6th all you do is gently pull down and let it travel it's normal course while going to 4th. I digress a bad driver will own himself everytime and I have seen it happen to plenty of Sti and wrx guys. Young guys who abuse the car and say oh yeah my gears grind or tranny sucks.
As far as calling people ricer kind of immature, if the person wants to do something to their car thats fine. JUST DON'T THINK AND CARRY AN ATTITUDE THAT YOUR FAST, HOT, DA BOMB..... or whatever kids say today. If you guys really want to see people insult other owners go to the srt4 forums....lol

Is there are rice thread around here? I have a couple of great pics to start it with. Nothing better than grabbing your camera on a slow night and cruising for rice. I've actually thought that it might make a great contest to have a bunch of guys cruise one nights, seeing who could find the best rice. Winner gets a compilaton of Auto Zone products.

I don't understand why they do it? Who is telling them that it looks good? Someone must have said something positive, or else they would have taken if off.

Well just to clear things up the term "rice" was meant ONLY (in the beginning) for foreign cars more specficly all Asian cars modded or not but more for the the "modded" cars. But along came some douche that thought,"I like the rice cars but i have a domestic car. Still l wanna be a rice car." There was born the wannabe rice of the car scence. Thus names like domestic rice, wannabe rice, poser rice were invented just for these special group of f**kers.

Now the terms for the wannabes started to be used loosely and people were just throwing the words at any guy that put 18" rims on a cavy or a neon or some guy the tinted the windows of their Probes. But thats not the point the point is that everyone has different meaning for the wannabes or domestic rice. Now if you don't think your car is rice but someone else does just let it go. Don't get into an argument with the person and try to be a smarta**. Everyone has an opinion so please let people have them.

Now what we have here are two guy (or whoever is arguing) pretending to be smart whipping out their car facts like they are some sort of car god. Now I'm not saying i'm then either of you guys are stupid but please shutup!! If you want to debate this fine go start a thread somewhere else cause you are post jacking this thread.

While the Cobalt ss does look kinda ricey because of the spoiler other then that its alright with me. Now if i got a Cobalt SS i would have to get rid of the spoiler and get some like DomesticSS has for his car.

Now to the subject of this thread:
I feel kinda bad for the guy only cause it sounds like something i would do (shifting from 4 to 2 or whatever he did) then again it wasn't your car and you don't know the so whocares.

(sorry for spelling or grammer crap i had run to class)

Ok well one just because it FWD, 4 cyl. , and small displacement doesnt means it rice these are just opinions shot off by people...if you can tell me what racing bible you read that in i'd like to know, my dad has a Camaro Z28 and my uncle has a Nova SS so RWD isnt out of my hands im pretty sure that they'd blow your ******* doors off...if the car comes the way it looks from the factory such as Cobalt SS, SRT4, RSX, STi, EVO it is impossible to be rice because there are no mods to make it look that way its just he way it comes...if you dont like the way the car looks, i.e. wing and whatnot, DONT BUY THE ******* CAR...dont buy the car and then complain ohh i dont like the wing or i dont like that...wtf why did u buy it then

ohh yah PK my buddy that owns a camaro i go to school with and his dad has a couple vettes and they give my car alot of respect because that what it deserves...you have no true friends that y they talk and laugh behind your back

I don't understand what you mean when you say "give you a lot of respect"? Do they pat you own the back and tell you "nice car"? Even if they did it doesn't mean that they actually like the car, only a ***** would tell you to your face they didn't like your car. "Saying laughing behind your back" might have been to strong, perhaps the more appropriate choice of words would be "double talking you." In other words, saying they like your car, but in their hearts thinking to themselves “I would never buy that.”

Quite frankly it's not an insult, car like ours aren't for every one, and they most certainly are not for people who are fans of American Muscle. Don't take it so personally. Now as for my friends, well their honest with me, some like it, others don't. However, I don't care what they think; I bought my car for me, that’s the bottom line.

Oh and there is no bible that says FWD 4cyl is RICE, but if you were to ask someone to define rice using ten descriptive words, I would be willing to bet FWD, 4cyl, Big Rims, and obnoxious spoiler would all be used. Sound familiar?
