The thing is, learning how to launch a car like the STI usually take a lot of practice, which in turn puts a lot of wear and tear on the drivetrain. In the end most STi drivers end up giving up before they get good enough to put down great times.

All in all the STI and the EVO shouldn't be drag racing. Although they are very fast when launched correctly, in time the extra strain on the drive train will end up taking its toll. The cars are really made for tracks, auto x, and rally (if your dumb enought to rally your 30,000 dollar car God bless you).

I can tell you why that 2004 is running terrible times, the intake. Although spots on Cobb's website say they have fuel maps for intakes, they don't ( http://cobbtuning.com/sti/accessport/index.html )! The result is a car that actually loses power, compared to stock. If you see any guy in an STI running an intake without serious, serious modifications, he's going to be slower than stock. The stock airbox on the STI is very good, and is actually a cold air system. Unfortunately the resonators in the system hide the turbo sounds, so a ton of people run intakes (myself included), and end up losing power. Next time you see that guy, tell him to take the intake off, and reinstall the map, I bet he will do much better.
i know all about the aftermarket intake problems. my WRX had an injen CAI on the car when i bought it. at night, the car would shake pretty badly at idle. im not sure on powerloss as i never had the stock intake. i cut down the intake to make a short ram out of it and the shaking went away. about 3 months after i got the car, i got a FMIC setup, so there is no chance of me running the stock airbox anymore, besides, my car has been taken as far as a stock turbo/fuel system WRX can go

but like i said, the track i go to is a slow track, but i saw an ion redline running 14.7's there and srt4's hitting high 13's with some mods. im pretty sure the low times also have a lot to do with the fact that STI's and WRX's have top mount intercoolers that heatsoak horribly in the up to 10-15min you have to wait to get a run in.

I saw a guy dyno with that particular unit on his STI and his air fuel ratios were all screwed up. Anything but the stock air box causes turbulence over the MAF sensor, and that equals bad. If power is your goal, get a drop in filter and keep the stocker.

This advice is not limited to the Impreza, most modern cars will have the same problem. Don’t waste your money on an intake; get something that comes with an ecu tune.

purchased a wideband o2 setup and did the tuning myself

tuning is actually my favorite part of working on a car, your hands stay clean and you make the car run better and gain power

i truely see it as a waste of money to pay someone to do something to my car.

Well that explains how you kept the car running well, most people don't bother tunning the air filter.

yea, if i could do it all over again, i would get the UTEC and wideband first

stock turbo is maxed out, i was thinking of getting a bolt on turbo, but my friends convinced me to do something cool

after i get a new tranny, clutch, flywheel, and front LSD this december, the fabrication begins

twin walbro 255 high pressure pumps
custom fuel rails
aeromotive FPR
-an fittings and stainless line from fuel tank to rails and regulator
custom MAF pipe(bigger diameter)
rerouting the intercooler piping
ITS 60-1 turbo
tial 38mm wastegate
800CC injectors
custom made header, up pipe, down pipe, and making my apex'i N1 exhaust full 3inch with V Bands everywhere(made by my friends and I)
and finally, ceramic coating all metal piping and the exhaust housing on the turbo

basically, its gonna be a showcase of the fabrication that my friends and i are capable of. hopefully it will bring in some buisness to pay for all those parts, lol.
