but didn't GM rate the lsj bottom end for up to 300hp? I know about the head gaskets failing at about 270hp but i want try cams and port & polished head anyway.

Not too sure bud...from what I read though, the motor is only good to about 300 horse unless you replace the pistons. Once you get new pistons you should be good to go for quite a while

I'm nevus about modding this car because of all the problems that other people and myself have had. I mine I love the car. but(For example) I'm stock I've had a bad clutch switch, rim paint chipping, axle clicking, cat rattles and abs codes,(and other stuff I don’t remember at the moment) so doing anything more scares me but I still just won't to kill an srt!

My advice...drive it like it's stolen...if it breaks then fix it. Nothing is worse than being scared to drive your car because something might break. Something might break on all cars when you trounce on them...thats the name of the game...you have to pay to play.

No car yo buy or anything you do will keep it from eventually going...poop...and something breaking.

The only internal component I wouldn't worry about is the crank. The pistons are hypereutectic and just like everyone else said; they'll fail near the 300hp mark. The rods are beefy for a stock application but GM never mentions that they are forged metal fracture splits made by Mahle. Good rods...but I would much rather have true forged steel fracture split rods than forged powdered metal.

I agree with tofu.

It is too cheap to rebuild it correctly once it is out of the car rather than leaving in "IF'y" parts.

I believe with stage II and other supporting mods along with pistons would = a good race with a stage 3 srt-4. The main thing is getting traction. SRT-4s have a tough time with this as do we. Their cars are a little lighter then ours and they have a 2.4 turbo engine. We already have less power running a 2.0 not to mention once a turbo gets spooled up hes just gonna pull and pull. I think (not sure) stage 3 SRT-4 is running like 21psi? I say we build a 2.4 ecotec engine with that new super charger that eaton put out. Have some pistons and all the other supporting mods and say bye bye SRT-4!

that is the funniest assumption ever... no way would a StageII Cobalt run a 11.45sec 1/4 mile like Chad has done with his S3 SRT4 lol.

Get real man... S2 Cobalts are still not capable of low 12s

Yeah you can build the LSJ up to 1200hp... all you have to do is keep the valve cover and replace EVERYTHING else.
