For the Record: GTO vs. Stg 2 SS/SC
i am in no way a mustang fan boy or anything but i have been around ls1's for a while and i know what they are capable of and it is a drivers race between fbody's and mach's not gto's (04)
i don't hate the 04 gto its a nice car but it is not as fast as some of its counterparts that got ls1's before it

so that makes me think the gto is about as fast as a mach 1

the mph trap could have been inflated do to more wheelspin. mach's are usually a drivers race for f body's its how wars start on ls1tech
gto's got to be fun to drive to man 350 tq at the wheels is not joke
The problem with a lot of GTO owners is really just ignorance and in some cases a combination of age and ignorance. Older GTO owners probably never considered purchasing a Cobalt SS/SC at any point, so they likely know nothing about it. They just see one and think it's another tuner kid with a fart pipe and bolt-on garish wing.
People look at performance statistics between the stock versions of both cars, and see that the GTO is clearly superior. Perhaps they even raced a stock SS/SC and concluded that the car was slow when they demolished it. What they fail to realize is how things change when the SS/SC gets modded and the GTO stays stock.
Since I'm familiar with the SS/SC, I know that a Stage 2+ one is nothing to laugh at. I know that an SS/SC is more fun to drive than my GTO. I know that I prefer my GTO on a long drive anywhere, but I also know that I'd kill for the SS/SC's stereo and sunroof.

If you're talking about 1/4 mile racing with good drivers in everything, an LS1 GTO and Mach 1 are good races. An LS2 GTO, F-Body, and '03/04 Cobra are good races.
It's fun to drive, but the two drive very differently. It's a matter of sporty feel vs. the feel of a touring car.

i know my buddy ran one back when he was bolt ons in his ls1 formula jesus it got nasty quick the thing went sideways at 40 on 315 bfg drag radials. needless to say a raping occured that night
read this its about the 04 GTO
Trap speed indicates that there is certainly more e.t. to be found in the GTO. Some better tires and a sticky starting line will bear this out in the future. For comparison sake to another late Pontiac, the 3,740 race weight 2002 Collector Edition T/A with an automatic and a 3.23 rear gear ran 13.13 at 104 mph at Englishtown, New Jersey for the September 2002 issue of HPP. The GTO has the advantage of more rated horsepower at 350 as compared to 325 for the Bird, the 6-speed over the automatic, and the steeper 3.46 gears. But its heavier at over 3,900 pounds race weight (sorry, the track had no scale for a proper weigh in and the 3 drivers weigh between 155 and 180 pounds, published curb weight for the GTO is 3,761 pounds). So posting 105.57 mph shows that there is power is there to reduce e.t.'s further.

That was fun when I had Nitto 555's on the GTO, but the thought of that just hurts now that I have Eagle F1 GS-D3's. The SS/SC is more fun to toss around than the GTO. It's lighter and has an excellent suspension. I can do things in the GTO that the SS/SC can't do, but I'd prefer to carve up curvy roads in an SS/SC. Although it'd be more fun in a SS/SC that was as fast as the GTO too.
The GTO does not feel fast to me. It is fast, but it just doesn't feel fast. A stock SS/SC feels faster than it is. Granted, the GTO is not supposed to feel fast. It's supposed to feel like a touring car, like the Monaro. The GTO does not feel like it handles well, but it does handle well for a car of its weight. The SS/SC feels like it handles well, and it does.
yeah stock the ss/sc is not impressive at all but pulley it and enjoy
However, I was very impressed with just how much the SS/SC woke up when the modding began. After doing the stage 5 and all the current upgrades the car still has its moments when I say "damn i'm pretty impressed" and yet I still average 30mpg
quite frankly, i don't care what GTO owners think of my car. 90% of them probably don't even know what it is.
am i impressed with the GTO? not really. a 5.7L v8 that can't even hang with an STi or EVO at the track or on a road course
... whats to be impressed with? why are you GTO owners making so many threads over here at CSS.net? why do you come here looking for pats on the back? no one cares about your mid life crisis, australian made car.
don't get me wrong.. they are nice looking, and they aren't slow. but they aren't fast either. the simple fact that you want to come over here and "prove" or show us that they are fast, is evidence they are in fact gay. the laughing stock of the american V8 community. It's a shame that GM turned a legend like the GTO, into a faint ghost of its former self.
cheesy threads like this one are the reason why the server gets full sometimes, and i don't have acess to info that i need for critical DIY projects. all in all STFU and find a GTO forum.
