Z-28 Camaro Vs SS/SC
Z-28 Camaro Vs SS/SC
So my lease on my SS/SC will be up in 6 months or so, and since I'm back in school I've been looking for something reliable, fast, and cheap to replace it. I happened to come across a 1996 Z-28 with only 41k miles for a very good price on ebay. I snatched it up and I couldn't be happier with it... the car is like brand new inside and out. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's an auto, but you can't have everything I guess. But anyway, this post was supposed to be about a race...
I just had to find out which of my cars was the fastest so I talked my girlfriend into driving my Camaro and racing me in my SS/SC. She's never raced before but I figured she couldn't screw up too bad in an automatic car. My Cobalt is completely stock, but I've always been impressed with its power. I have a friend with an Evo and I edge him out in drag races from a roll all the time. My new Camaro is stock except for a cold air intake and a loud flowmaster exhaust. Since its a 1996 it has the LT1 engine which was rated at 285 hp and 325 tq. With the intake and exhaust, I'm guessing that it's putting out more like 310 hp.
We only raced once, and it was from a 40 mph roll. I started out in 2nd gear and immediately got about a car length on her. I had a good shift into 3rd, but she suddenly reeled me in and started inching away. By the time we backed off at around 115 mph, she had 1.5 lengths on me. After the race she told me that she didn't floor the Camaro right away, so I assume that's why I got an early lead on her. The Camaro also launches a lot better than the Cobalt from a stop, so I'm sure it would win that race too.
Overall I'm impressed with both of my cars. The SS/SC is fast and handles slightly better than the Camaro, but it's hard to beat that big V-8. There are pics of all of my cars if you click on my photos.

Why oh why another thread about a Camaro today, I miss my 96 Camaro. Think I'm gonna have to go buy one again damn it, can't wait till the new one comes out, I bought the cobalt cause I'm a chevy guy and I didn't like any other new car. Didn't want to buy used again. Good buy shift kit will make it even faster.
Any idea how much additional power the LT's and Y pipe would give me? What do they cost? I wasn't really planning on doing anyhting else to this car because I'm going to be using it as my daily driver and it has to be reliable.
long tubes and a tune will yield anywhere from 20-40 WHP depends on what car , what motor , what other mods you have done to it, Long tubes on a cammed car are gonna make more power than long tubes on a stock car
LT1 exhaust manifold's are known to be EXTREMELY restrictive. On my old LT1 SS i gained 29rwhp with hooker LT's and an off road Y pipe. Going with headers won't decrease reliability. The SBC engines are one of the most reliable engines in the world. I never had a problem.
