All I did was loosen the bottom one and took it the whole way up to the top locking rings. Then I turned the top and it took all of them down

you should be moving the strut mount up not messing with the preload..
Hence why I asked if you just unbolted the coil from the bottom and screwed it up into the body. AFAIK, you don't touch the top one after you set it for the spring.
