general tire sizing info

im pouring over these wheel sizes right now and i dont fully understand what is going on...im not sure how they compare to stockers, but right now im looking at some 18" rims with a 35mm offset. my question is, how the hell do i figure out the basic part like 205/50? i dont like a tire that has a huge amount of sidewall on it, i prefer something low profile, but not lacking enough to look like there isnt a tire on the rim...anyone know what a preferable size would be?

It would be best to go with a 225 - 245 width tire for a 8" rim.

These are just suggestions:
225/40 R18 will be perfect. Speedometer will be right on.
225/45 R18 will give you a slightly taller sidewall than the 225/40
235/40 R18 little wider tire, slightly taller sidewall than the 225/40
245/35 R18 wider tire slightly shorter sidewall than the 225/40

Of course you can go with any tire size you want to fit ont he rim, these are just my suggestions. If you want to check out tire differences you can go here and put in your numbers: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Yes. I would say a 225/40 is perfect for an 8" rim.
