Spare Race Tires

Hey I was thinking,
If I'm going to autocross alot

or for people who do and drag or whatever

Does anyone have an extra pair of rims with 'race' tires on them?

Just for the front wheels...

How practical would it be to do that?

a lot of people do it. if you're going to get serious about autocross though and tires, read up on the rules. iirc sometimes running X tire will put you in a class that the car may not be built for. also, get all 4 tires if youre that serious. for drag racing if you're even considering getting a tire to up the ante, do it the right way first: 15" wheels, and a slick.

AutoX has lots of different classes with different rules for each class. In stock classes you can run a R-comp tire as long as you stay within the guidelines of the stock class. If you are in a modified class you are limited to what size but bigger then stock. What you should do is see what class your car falls into and search the SCCA rules for that class.

i meant X as in like "insert brand/type of tire here" lol. didn't mean to make it sound like X was a type of tire.

You'll probably be in Street modified if you have pullied down, this class can get very expensive as it allows for ALOT of mods. You can still only run street tires though. These are the tires I will be running for the remainder of the season

Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec

I've heard nothing but good things, even the rep from Tire Rack said star specs were amazing for an autox novice, grip almost as good as an r-compound. They're also very affordable, at least for the size I'm using.

LIke others have said, for auto-x you will need 4 tires. I ran r-comps, which put me into a street prepared class. But now I've swapped out for the TVS, so I'm in SMF (street-mod for FWD-only, gets you away from the RWD Miatas and AWD EVO/STi crowd).

Yeah, mine have seen more track laps than auto-x trips.

I've heard the RS3's aren't good for autox as they require too much heat to work well. Also they don't give Very much feedback towards they're limit.

To the OP I would suggest a good set of sub200 tread wear tires. Good for autox and they would be pretty good for drag as well. Obviously not as good as radials but somewhat close
