For the track I want a set of 17's, but no one wants to test 17's. Maybe if I have time I will stop by a wheel shop and see what they can do for us.

Does anyone know the backspacing of the stock wheel of the top of their head?

I would go out and measure, but I am at my apartment, not my shop, thus no tools.

The reason I ask is, I want to run a 17x8" rim, but I can't seem to find one that will clear the Brembos. Also, what offset would we need to clear an 8" rim? I always get confused when thinking of offset, I am thinking a +45 mm offset, which will also help clear the brakes (am I thinking correctly?).

Thanks guys!

So if I get a 17 in wheel with a 42 mm offset or greater it should fit over the TC brembos?

You have to test fit the wheels. You can't go by wheels specs because of the Brembos. The shape of the spokes comes in to play for clearance.

FYI-

This has been a while, but I couldn't find the exact answer from GM anywhere so I called Chevrolet. I know people weighed them theirselves, but I wanted to be sure.

The stock wheels weigh 23lbs/wheel. Stright from the horses mouth.

MAN!! I'm glad we got THAT straightened out. Now all we need is somebody to tell us, FOR SURE, what light weight, 17X8 wheel will work with our Brembo's. Preferably without resorting to spacers. We all need help with the straight line traction issue.

What is the width of the rim? If its 7in-8in wide yes. Any wider and it may not fit as well.

Im new the this stuff about tires, but im looking to lighten up my stock 09 ss rim weight as soon as i save up a little bit.

But aren't other factors going to determine actual benefits of a 17x8?
such as: there will be a .5" x the radius of the sidewall increase of weight per tire. (x2 for each tire for both sidewalls)

plus the increased weight of 10mm or rubber on the outside of the tire (assuming you're moving up to 235 width)
plus the increased drag on the tire from road contact with the extra 10 mm of rubber.
all of these things would impact overall weight and gas mileage of the car, correct?

i still think the net change in weight would be negative and would offset the increase road/tire drag.

Points 1 & 2 are invalid since the mass of those two is far less than the mass of a wheel that is 1in in diameter less.

I think even in the most extreme cases, the added area of contact patch and overall lighter wheels should make up for the added weight of the sidewall and width of what you started with.

Point 3 can fall under the same thing as above. The minimal amount of drag added is far surpassed by the added grip you gained.

Lastly offset will not increase or decrease the amount of drag since that has nothing to do with the tire touching the pavement.
