tire sizes

how tall would a 40/17r stand, and a 45/17r stand right now i have 50/17r's and i rub in the rear and it just looks like i have too much tire, id personally like to get the 40's just cause its two sizes smaller, but im afraid that it will be too small
heres a pic of it now:[IMG][/IMG]

now after seeing this site i have a question. i have the stock tires 215/45R18.. when i switch to a 225/40R18 it says the new tire is 14mm shorter. i know this might sound stupid but i suck when it comes to tires. will this make the car sit lower, or will it just open more of a gap between the tire and wheelwell? its just that i lowered the car for a reason and i dont want to get smaller tires and reopen the gap between the tires and wheelwells.
