pinging sound from head after turbo
ok, i turbocharged my 2.2 and did a base tune and was gonna dial in the tune when i got the downpipe made. i ran without no exhaust for a couple of days til i got my downpipe made, i now have a downpipe and finally fixed my oil leak. on the way back from fixin the leak i started hearing a sound. i thought it was from my exhaust hittin the underside of the car. as im drivin home its gets louder and louder. has anyone else experienced this issue? i know for sure i had the wrong spark plugs after checking around so im gettin my ngk 1 step colder plugs on friday, would that be the problem possibly? HELP ME PLEASE!! haha, thanks
What grade fuel are you using? If you're not running 93 octane or above with the turbo setup its going to ping. Also running around with no downpipe and an open turbo on an aluminum head wasn't the best idea in the world. Try the gas change your plugs and see if its still pinging and in the mean time don't beat on it. Its a possibility by you running open turbo like that that you've burnt a valve. I've seen it happen numerous times on numerous cars and engines.

i put in 93 octane before i started to install the turbo. i havent been drivin it for the past week since it started makin the sound. my spark plugs comes in tommorow, and if it that doesnt work me and my friend are gonna pull off the valve cover and see of we can see anything monday. also im goin to use my tuner i got from Trifecta and record wat the PCM is puttin out and send it to Vince and see if its anything a tune can fix. how hard is it to fix the burnt valve? is it better to just change the whole head?
to replace a burnt valve you have to pull the head off and disassemble that cylinder section and just replace the valve, the valve guide, and the valve seal and make sure that it hasn't scorched the wall or damaged the top of the piston for that cylinder. If your plugs don't make a difference do a compression test on all 4 cylinders and see if you get any odd numbers. If you have a burnt valve you should have one cylinder that doesn't have correct compression but not always. Other way would be a visual inspection by taking off the intake and exhaust manifolds and looking inside the valve chambers. The other thing it could be is your tune like you say. If you don't have the proper fuel pressure that could have an effect to. Tuning a non turbo motor for a turbo isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. If you don't have a wideband air fuel to monitor your stoich ratio I would invest in one. Saves a lot of headaches and makes tuning a lot easier.
