What should I look for when buying a used transmission?

OK I am getting ready to purchase an LSD transmission for my Cobalt SS, I didnt get the G85 package from the factory and I was looking to add an LSD tranny to my car now.

I have a 2006 Cobalt SS\SC

So what should I look for when purchasing a transmission? What should I check? How would I shift the transmission with it out of the car? How can I tell what gear the transmission is in with it out of the car?

Any suggestions?

Thanx,
PD

just grab the arms on the top of the trans that the cables connect to. move them around into the different gears (dont know how to tell what gear your in sorry) if it shifts ok it should be good. you can also bring an axle and put it in the diff and spin it to make sure everything moves freely.

Thank you for posting, I did try that on a tranny that I looked at,

the top arm would click 3 times (im assuming 1,5, and N), the bottom arm was difficult to move but after I felt it click, I tried to move the top arm and it just went limp, wouldnt click into anything. and then it felt like it was in a bind and wouldnt shift at all.

Im sooo lost, does anyone know the pattern? and what couldve caused that in that tranny so that I can be sure not to end up buying sumthing that puts me in a situation with a bad tranny

my dads had a couple apart ill ask him tomorrow if he remembers the pattern. he works on trannys all day at work then goes home and works on more so who knows if hell remember he rebuilds so many.

did you try to turn the diff with a axle. it could be that the gears and syncros werent lined up right and you just needed to move it a bit in either direction.
