Timing chain / cyl 1 weird noise
Timing chain / cyl 1 weird noise
Hey guys, im getting a weird chatting/metal on metal knocking noise coming from the timing chain / cyl 1
at 1,100rpm its really bad, at idle it sounds like chattering in a loop. im trying to upload a video now
when driving i cant really hear it or when revving over 3k
My buddy who is a technican says i almost sounds like piston slap, how ever after looking at it for a while says it sounds more like chain tensinor issues, i found a video on youtube of a more violent version of my noise, and the issue was a broken chain tensioner bolt.
Anyone with simlar issues or know of anyone with this
Thanks.

Is yours a 07? Myself and a few others with the 07s had an issue with the timing chain tensioner going bad, and it has the chattering sound at idle you describe, its more noticeable at start up
Mine is an 06 built 10/05 i saw the TSB on the late 06/07 timing chain issue.
I think its more noticeable during cold but not 100% sure
Im due for an oil change so im going to get on that and see what happens

Ah okay, i assume you take off the valve cover and it will be there? would anything else have to be done, i dont think i would be comfortable doing this, done lots of things, but this i dont think i would try
you dont have to take nothing off, its on the back of the motor. the old unscrews the new one screws in its that simple.
it take me 10 min tops

Oh really. Thats interesting, i have never seen it, So i did a bit of research and it seems a few people have this issue, and this is the fix for it?
Will it be okay to drive on? no boost, just get me from a to b
Thank you for your help.

Take it to the dealer and get it done under your 5 year powertrain warranty(100,000km) look in your car info that came with the car when you bought it ,should be a copy of your warranty in there.
Heard the video and would think if it was the tensioner it would have more of a rattle to it.
But let us know what happens.

My car sounds exactly like this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9huwAibdBo
Tensioner .......Had the same issue and replacing the tensioner fixed it. Some people just unscrew the old one and pop in the new but thats not the proper way.
You should release the tensioner before turning the car over. If you just screw it in when it's compressed (and it has to be compressed for install) ....you have to wait for oil pressure to release it. For the little bit of time it takes to pop the valve cover off it's worth it . Otherwise you risk jumping a tooth on the timming chain. With the Valve cover off ... give the chain a tap at the tensioner and it will releases. The valve cover gasket is reuseable so to me it's crazy to take a chance like that to save time .
