What parts void warranties or system warranties...

So i am curious as to what parts would void warranties..... im talkin bolt ons here.

Intake - I wouldnt think so
Charge Piping - I wouldnt think so
Down pipe - I have no idea, i hope it doesnt but imagine it would.
Cat back exhaust - Shouldnt?
Intercooler - No idea...

Anyone knows these answers? And dont say tune cuz thats obvious unless you go GMST1

from what i understand the "stealership" can do what they want lol. Ive heard that if the part is a gmpp its all good but i'm not 100% sure. Also they could just claim abuse and not there problem for part failure. All come down to the dealer some are cool and other are picky and don't give you a break

no they cannot do what they want. they have to prove that the actual aftermarket part cause the break or problem with the car before voiding a warrenty. i believe thats a federal law. also even if thats the case they can only void the warrenty on that section of the car. so if they void your suspension due to putting lowering springs and blowing your struts they cant void your powertrain warrenty. i know this due to my car having lowering springs(i dont have blown struts yet) and having pre-mature front and rear break ware. lowering springs would not have voided my warrenty since it did not causethe pre-mature wear. a tune will void the powertrain warrenty no questions asked due to the fact your are altering your computer to do what a manufactuer will deam "unsafe" for the car.

hey ******** thanks for the help, how about I did search, and was trying to gather all the info in one thread, and maybe the answers from search werent clear and and concise, or Im trying to bring new light to a subject.

But no you had to go to the standard "LOOK AT THE SEARCH GAWD". Well since you seem to know all the answers and take the time to read the thread, all the replies and still post meaningless info instead of maybe posting something useful, OR JUST DONT REPLY AT ALL and save yourself some time, you could of said something to help out the cause for me and many others who may not have had known said information. And than you go the extra mile by mocking me, and any other people who may be new to the Cobalt and GM.

Way to go man, your a big help to the community.

Any aftermarket part can void warranty. Like you hids in your car that cn void the headlights, housing, all the wire for them ect. It is like that for every part.

ya i know that maybe i should be clearer and ask if anyone has had a system voided on them by that particular part, I.e. cat back would void exhaust system warranty, like you said with the lights and what not.

Well an exhaust voids entire powertrain. We just had a new 2010 camaro in the shop blown diff, had exhaust and had been tracked, and his warranty was pulled.

well tracking obviously is the reason why warranty is voided, blown stuff on track, that only makes sense, think that is a little different from just having a diff blow on the street with an exhaust??

Your warranty is safe unless you tune it. The only way they can void it is if you break something because of the aftermarket bolt on, and they have to prove that it was the actual cause of the damage in question. And if anyone wants to question it I can tell you where in your manual it does say you are protected under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975

The only way an exhaust could void the warranty is if it was the direct cause of the problem that the vehicle is being serviced for. If you tune your car your power-train warranty is shot if you break anything. Most bolt-ons will not void your warranty. A lot of dealerships will tell you it does just because they don't wanna deal with it and they think they found a pushover customer who will pay cash for a repair that is covered. I spoke with my salesman and service manager prior to my purchase and smoothed everything over as far as bolt ons. As long as I don't mess with the ECU.

The car didn't break at the track. It broke on the road.

let me break it down, because people are quick to say magnusson moss and whatnot. Here's the deal. Any part you change on the car voids the warranty ON THAT PART and also on any part damaged by what you put on the car. Key problem here is parents. Most parents are not happy with their kids modding their car. Most members are kids. Where the problem comes in is when it's time to get warranty work done, even if it has nothing to do with your mods, the dealer tells the owner and/or parent that they can't fix it for free because of the mods. Most parents get pissed, and just end up paying for it because they're not going to go to court because they don't know any better. So the dealer often gets over on people for things that should be fixed. Know your rights, and if you are young and live with your parents and they either help pay for the car, pay for it, or are on the loan, make sure they are cool with you modding and understand how warranty's work in regards to said mods.

The plain simple fact here is ANY aftermarket part or modification can void your warrenty if it causes the break. if your breaks wear and you have an exhaust on your car they CANNOT void it. if your engine blows up and everythings stock except for lets say interceptor gauges, the CANNOT void your warrenty. i had just taken my car to the dealer with an exhaust and h and r lowering springs on the car. the rear brakes were shot and the front rotors are warped at only 8500 miles. the dealer covered everything under warrenty and even did a recall on the charge piping. so there for that shows that UNLESS the aftermarket part causes the break(which they have to prove it did that) your warrenty will be fine.

when it comes to tuning. just get an aftermarket ecu. i got mine from ecuoutlet and works just like the other one. the only thing is i cant turn the change oil light off. Just like everyone else said. they only void the parts that you put on.

Thanks for the input, but what the hell are you talking about..... I understand your point and it can be true, but were where you going with it? I'm talking about say you put a Downpipe on, and the bearings go in the turbo. Altho the downpipe is related, it wasnt the cause, I wanted to know if people here have already had problems with dealers because of some simple bolt ons, which honestly in the SS/TC is all exhaust related / heat related, and only helps the car run better.

So you were basically saying that dealers know that kids mod their cars behind their parents back and try to make them pay for it when something blows up with it, and the parents wont do anything? While this is true in maybe SOME cases you make it sound like a conspiracy theory! haha, read this with a light hearted attitude to dude im not trying to come off harsh.

And if you were somewhat directing your post at me, the OP. Im 23 work FT and go to college full time. And as far as modding, My father did more **** to his vehicles than i would ever think about so i dunno what to tell ya there....

For the 5,000th time, let me break down the maguson act for you all, play by play.

-You install the part, something breaks on said car, doesn't matter if the part actually caused the break or not.

-Dealer sees installed aftermarket part, makes up some BS about that part causing the failure regarding the warranty claim. Dealer voids entire powertrain warranty.

-You argue with dealer and get nowhere.

-You have to pay to fix the part, because you need your car back on the road.

-You HIRE your lawyer and file a lawsuit against GM. You PAY court costs.

-Trial goes to court, judge finds that it is evident your part did not cause the problem.

-GM is then ordered to repay you for the repairs, court costs, and lawyer fees.

Now, is it worth the gamble of putting all of that money on the line to pay lawyer fees and court costs to get GM to pay for your part? That's up to you... GM is going to call your bluff every time you throw the magnuson act threat at them. 'Tis why my car is still 100% stock, because I don't currently have the time or money to invest in fixing my car should a problem arise.

read the 3rd sentance. Anything you mod or change will ONLY void the warranty on that part, or anything damaged as a result of that part. As an example, you put on lowering springs, and you're not going to get your shocks covered. But if you have an exhaust, your shocks will be covered.

that's where you have to know your rights, and tell the dealer to prove it. It falls in the dealers lap to prove abuse, not in your lap to prove you didn't abuse it. I had a 2.9 pulley and a few other things and had an axle fixed under warranty because they couldn't prove abuse. If you walk in and are a ******** about it, it's probably not going to get fixed. But talk to the people nicely and you have a better chance. Remember that many of the people that would be fixing your car are also into cars themselves.

Re-read my post at the bottom of page 2. Yes, it is their responsibility to prove that you abused it IF you file a formal suit stating that your rights have been violated.
