Thumbs up Frequently Asked Cobalt Questions! Updated!!!

JonyyB I put it all in one list so nobody has to search through pages. People please ask more questions or add questions with anwsers and I will add to the list. I will update once a day and keep it all here to make it easy for you guys and gals!!!

Q: What is the SS S/C Bolt Pattern and offset?
A: 5x110 and 42mm

Q: Can you get colored recardos?
A: NO, and its recaros

Q: Whats that popping noise coming from my exhaust while i downshift?
A: Afterfiring, where unburnt gas thats being pumped in comes in contact with the exhaust and manifold and ignites creating a "pop"(this is not backfiring)

Q: Can I add a blow off valve to my SS/SC.
A: The SS/SC already has a bypass valve intergrated into the M62 Supercharger.

Q: Whats the stock pulley size
A: 3.35 inches or 84 mm

Q: Whats the smallest pulley I can run without a shorter belt
A: 3 inches is generally the accept lowest size without the drive belt slipping

(below has two anwsers read below to find out why!!!)
Q : Is the cobalt ss s/c intercooled?
A : yes water to air intercooler

Q : where is the ss s/c intercooler?
A : its in the same area as the radiator and a/c condensor

1st Q: NO!!!
1st A: WE HAVE AN AFTERCOOLER!!!

2nd Q: IN THE AFTERMARKET DREAMS? LOL
2nd A: THE AFTERCOOLER IS LOCATED BETWEEN THE SUPERCHARGER AND THE INTAKE MANIFOLD.

Calling them intercoolers has come to be accepted EVERYWHERE Randy so relax. All cars have aftercoolers if you want to be technical. Only twin turboed cars can have intercoolers and 99% of them don't, technically speaking.

He is right though about the location xskier it is located between the supercharger and intake. The heat exchanger for the INTERcooler is located between the radiator and a/c condensor.
(now back to the questions and anwsers)

Q: Where is the battery?
A: In the trunk

Q: What is that loud "bang" i get on a hard 1-2 shift, and is there anything I can do about it?
A: It is the engine slamming hard against the stock motor-mounts, torque braces solve the problem completely.

Q: Do I have a ghost in my trunk?
A: Possibly, but it is more likely that the sound you are hearing is the trunk latch doing a self-test.

Q: What is a good launch RPM on street tires?
A: 2-2500 produces the best results for me, when done while slipping the clutch just a little and rolling into the throttle.

Q: What's up with the "wall" i get trying to go into gear occasionally?
A: Synchro issues- can be fatal to the tranny, get it checked SOON or even sooner than that if possible. (How do I know you might ask? My baby is in the shop waiting for a new transmission because a roll pin broke the last time that happened to me, and turned the internals to powder)

FAQ: How much are your monthly payments? How much will my payments be?
ANSWER: This question is hard to answer since it depends on so many variables (amount, term, down payment, rate, etc.) The best thing you can do is use an online payment calculator such as this one: http://www.lendingtree.com/common/bp...sourceid=33928

Note: The link above also gives recent interest rates

Q: What do Cobalt SS/SC run stock?
A: 14.3 has been the fastest so far. Was tofu stock? If so then 14.1

Q: What is the G85 package??
A: It is the performence package that includes a Quaife LSD and Recaro seats.

Q: Can/Should I use Nitrous?
A: Link to one of the many threads concerning this topic.

Q. Which Nitrous System Is Better?
A. Personal Preference

Q. Is GMPP ever coming out with the Stage Kits?
A. Eventually Just wait like the rest of us

Q: can wheel hop be corrected?
A: yes, motor mounts, motor mount inserts, dampers, or add control arm bushings

Q: can i put SS/SC front/rear bumpers, wing etc... on my LS or base cobalt
A: yes....if you want to **** off the ss/sc guys

Q: Can I put a blow off valve on my cobalt ss supercharged ?
A: No

Q: Who makes a turbocharger kit for our car?
A: Nobody, yet. Many are in development. You can get one right away via a custom installation if you want to.

Q: How much can my car handle before I have to upgrade my powertrain?
A: 250HP is a very safe number. Either transmission is fine.

Q: Will 225/60/16 winter tires rub at full lock on the SS?
A: On my SS they sure did, now I've got 215/60/16's winters.

Q: What is the Pontiac that looks just like the Cobalt?
A: Pontiac Pursuit is a Canadain only model that is a rebadge of the Cobalt, but has no supercharged model.

Q: Whats the 0-60 second time
A: Chevy rates the Cobalt SS/SC at 0-60 in 6.0 second, magazine tests range from 5.9 to 6.5

Q: what are some of the best web sites to find aftermarket cobalt parts?
A: https://www.cobaltss.net/vendorindex.php

Q: Where can I find Amplifier and Radio pinouts, circuit ID's, and color codes?
A: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/electronics-audio-video-49/cobalt-audio-pinouts-2823/

Q: Is the Cobalt SS/SC underrated in terms of horsepower and torque?

A: Yes, the average stock dyno to the wheels seems to net _______.

(here is some more info)
A quick search told me that the SS/SC is in fact underrated, but I don't feel comfortable filling in that blank since I don't have long time experience on this forum. Perhaps one of the vets can make up an average based off all the dynos they've seen.
I think 215 is a good estimate for wheel power, but it depends on testing conditions and type of dyno. Technically, it's not really under-rated. GM says 205hp @ 5400 rpm, which is for the most part accurate. The only difference is that our cars keep building strong power all the way to redline, so our 205 @ 5400 (usually about 180 on the stock dynos I've seen) jumps to about 230-240 @ 6450.
(now back to the quetions and anwsers)

Q: Does anyone think the Performance Package with the Recaro seats and the limited slip differential is worth paying the extra money for, does the limited slip differential actually increase the performance by a noticable amount?

A: All depends on what you plan on using the car for. If you just want a sporty street car for your daily commuting, then I'd say save your money. But for track racing / autox, it's a must-have.

Q: Can you get colored recardos?
A: NO, and its recaros

You missed my question about the degree to which the Cobalt's whp is "underrated" by GM. It was answered in the original thread.

Does everyone think that the stock clutch can handle drag or street racing with the stock supercharged engine or should a performance clutch be inserted with no other modifications to the stock 2.0 liter engine?

Whats the top speed of a stock ss s/c?

Does the cobalt have an upshift indicator of its own? If so, is it good enough, or is it recommended to get an aftermarket shift light?

Boost Gauge?

Okay, so this may seem like a dumb question, but what the hell is the boost gauge for, and how do you "read" it. When I originally bought my Cobalt, it was supposed to be my "commuter" car. But, I find that I'm becoming more and more interested in it outside of my commute. I've had it for about three months now, and the whole boost gauge thing is driving me nuts. I know a lot more about my truck than tuner cars. By the way, I'm fairly new to the sight, so I'd like to say "hello" everyone, and that this car could get me into a whole lot of trouble. Bright red, lots of power, and me a CDL driver if you know what I mean. Anyhow, I sank a whole lot of money into my truck before I finally bought my Cobalt. Now I'm dreaming of all the great things I can do with this car........!

Yes you can fit 17x7's on a cobalt LS

Your boost gauge reads how much boost is being produced by the supercharger and fed into the engine.

Thats all you need to "read" on it.

I know about that. I guess what I'm asking is exactly how the boost gauge works in relation to how I'm driving/ wanting the car to perform. When is the optimal time to shift, give it gas, back off etc. in reguards to the numbers on the gauge

Great post. would be great if you keep updating it as a general FAQ. Many they even could do a wiki or FAQ index. I hate forum seach it is too broad and takes a lot of time to sift through.
