View Full Version : 2.2 Cav & 2.2 LS parts compatible?

I've noticed that a lot of the available parts for the 2.2 Cobalt are just Cav. parts, but will they actually work on the Cobalt? Are there any changes to the Cobalt's Ecotec? I imagine all these should work with it, except stuff like an intake since the body style is different and it won't fit in the same place, but other than that, can I just start ordering or what?

Sorry for all the newbie questions, I've been a 3800 II  owner for the past 2 years...Ecotec is still fresh to me.

the engines are completely different, some parts may work bc of similar design, but i wouldnt bet on it
the cobalt is a completely diff car than the cavy

how are the engines completely different? the internals have to be the same as a cav i would imagine....

well i meant it depends on which engine cavalier you have, the ecotech block could be the exact same, but besides internals, the cars dont share much in common

The Ecotec 2.2's in the Cobalt and Cavi are the same, Head, block, and internals. mounting, intake, and the header back are diff. But if you wanna build the motor on the inside, yea, they are the same. computer will prob be diff 2, but like a jet chip for the 02 cavi ecotec should be ok.

I thought the Cobalt engine had a special polymer piston coating that the Cavi did not have (where the 5 extra HP comes from).
Also thought a new cam chain tensioner.

the basic ECOtec engine remains virtually unchanged since 2002 except for minor changes like piston coatings and as BJC pointed out revised timing chain tensioer...all the parts still swap back and forth....the Cobalt (A body) is a totally different car than the Cavy(J body) and virtually none of the "bolton" mods from the Jcar work on the Cobalt...besides engine bay dimensions, etc...the biggest changes to the L61 in the Cobalt is the addition of fly-by-wire or Electronic Throttle Control(the Cavy had a throttle cable). The PCM in the Cobalt is completely different than on the Cavy, it uses different circuit locations, connectors, memory, protocol language, DTC's and the Cobalt actually has a seperate Transmission Control Module (in auto cars) while the Cavy had all controls in one module....there are no computer mods/programs from the Cavy that work on the Cobalt....

but basically you can use cav's cams and stuff i would imagine because i might get cams for the ecotec
