Airbox question
Airbox question
Sorry if this has been posted b4 but i couldn't find anything via the search feature. Ok so, one of the guys at a cobalt meet we had told me he took his entire airbox out. His car sounds alot louder and he says its breathing alot better too. He didn't really explain how he did this, or show me what it looks like, but he said it was easy and only took 5min. Would anybody recommend doing this? and if so, could you please post some pics on how to, i'm still getting familiar with my balt.
If he took his entire intake system off, he'd have a exposed throttle body. Yes, it will be louder because you're hearing the engine operate without the intake system on there restricting airflow and sound.
He probably took off the filtering part too, which I don't suggest because it's there for a reason, to keep out the dirt in the air or even rocks/pebbles that might get into your engine.
Would I suggest it? No. Do it properly. Make or buy yourself a tube and less restritive filter. That's basically all it is.

That's on a SS/SC, he has a 2.2
Original poster, did he have a filter on or not?

I ran my intake back into the exhaust. The exhaust acts as a direct supercharger, and the car is now zero emissions. Of course, the liquid oxygen tank is a bit dangerous...
First of all if you take off the whole intake the car won't run. the MAF will show 0 flow and the computer will give it enough fuel to match the flow, 0. it will run for about 5 seconds, if you want to test it out, go for it. its not like 5 seconds is going to hurt if the car is free of anything that could get sucked in.
what he most likely did, and I have done this too, is remove the lower intake on the dirty side of the filter. to get to it you have to loosen the inner fender/ wheel well , its like 8 bolts so its not brain surgery by any extent. then you will see a huge plastic tube that looks like a square box from under the car, in fact thats just a water trap and baffeling. there is 1 bolt and one clip that hold it in. take both of those out, slide the whole piece out and put everything back together.
it sounds better, gets better fuel mileage, and seems to run a little better.
