View Full Version : Squeak in my Cobalt
Frenstall 10-11-2005, 06:41 PM I searched the forums and didn't find any threads pertaining to this specific issue. I am hoping that sombody has had this before and can tell me it is fixable and how so the dealer doesn't tear my car apart or simply do nothing.
The problem is a very anoying, high-pitched squeak coming from the drivers side rear. It happens everytime I drive over bumps in the road. This wouldn't normally anoy me but it seems to be happening more often and on even the slightest road imperfection. Either something is wrong or I've got a bird trapped in the back that gets anoyed by rough roads.
Any input would be appreciated.
p.s. also my passenger door leather edge is showing but I know that can be fixed easily
No clue man, I say have it serviced, its under warrenty :)
I have sqeaks in my driver side A pillar and the dash on the passenger side, dealer told me to bring it in and they will fix it. Im going to make sure im standing next to the when they work, make sure they do something as well not rip my car apart.

I've got the same thing on the driver's side and it's driving me up a wall. It sounds like it's coming from somewhere in the rear of the car but I can't exactly handle driving down the street and sticking my head in the backseat to find it either. Mine seems to have its' days where I either don't hear it at all or it won't cut it out...I drove home on the weekend and after 35 minutes of squeaking I was about ready to pull my hair out .

keeper51 10-11-2005, 07:34 PM i've just noticed a squeak today that is easily fixable mind u, my clutch squeaks pressing down and letting up
dervin3 10-11-2005, 08:30 PM The squeak is your latch for your split folding rear seats. Ever notice if you have rear passengers the squeak is gone.
brianfcp 10-11-2005, 08:58 PM if im parked on a slanted driveway and i kinda bounce on my seat, i hear squeaking as well. eh, its annoying.
also, stock hubcaps make noise in low speeds... also annoying. :) just pump up the stock radio and you wont hear anything. :D
brifriinc 10-11-2005, 09:08 PM yea i know that sqeak... to get rid of it, just fold down the back driver side seat.....
Waylin22 10-11-2005, 09:12 PM OMG ive been hearing the same thing for like a week now, i didnt want to have everyone think i was crazy but im glad more are hearing this....hhmm wonder what it is? sounds like its the rear seat or right rear side pannel or something. neway im takin it in to the dealer to get looked at
Frenstall 10-11-2005, 10:30 PM Please post as soon as you find out, this is driving me nuts!! I've done the old press on everything and see if it goes away and I can't find it to be anything within reach. I don't have time to see the dealer for a while so if anyone figures out how to fix it without the dealer or a temporary fix (foam/tape/anything) please post it!
Sigh, slowly becoming a dissatisfied Cobalt SS owner (until I hit the gas that is)
p.s. I will try folding down the seat tomorrow and see if that does it
cobaltsslvr 10-11-2005, 11:17 PM before i read the thread let me see if i'm correct. The subwoofer needs to be secured more tightly. Mine had the same problem so i went smacking every part of my car and when i smacked the subwoofer it made the noise! they mounted it tighter and its noise free now (except for bass :) )
cobaltsslvr 10-11-2005, 11:20 PM looks like no one else had a fix for the problem. I hope my answer helps everyone! The screws and crap where the subwoofer mounts through are to deep to reach with your finger so go to the dealer and have them tightin that thing up.
Frenstall 10-12-2005, 06:46 PM I put the drivers side rear seat down all day today, squeak is gone. Now I just need to figure out a perm fix that doesn't involve having the seat down all the time.

I'll take mine out for a spin tonight and try that to see if it solves my problem. I wonder if just slightly greasing up the latch and hinges would solve the problem...sounds to me like metal brushing against metal :).

I have the stock 15" steelies and hubcabs that squeak and rattle.... called GM corporate customer care today... after a lot of arguing/battling GM is now buying me new rims(and tires!) :D 16" stock alloys... but better than 15" squaky steelies... if anyone has these and needs details on how to get GM to buy you new ones... PM me for more details... hubcabs suck a$$... :cssNET:
memphisr24 10-27-2005, 08:39 PM I still have the squeak. When I tap my sub, it squeaks. I'm going to try and figure out a way to fix it.
WadaSty51 10-27-2005, 11:23 PM its the sub in the upgraded package.....there are 5 bolts u need 2 tighen...i did it 2 months ago....no more squeaking :)
memphisr24 10-27-2005, 11:35 PM yeah its annoying as hell
Spite4U 10-29-2005, 08:52 AM Spray some WD-40 on the rear seat hinges. This will make the squeeking go away. Be careful not to use too much or it will get on the upholstery.
Good luck!
TheMaxx 11-04-2005, 12:23 PM I have a sqeak too, and thought it was the seats, but it wasn't. I will check today to see if i can squeak the sub.
rmrider 11-07-2005, 12:36 PM gm and their squeaks, i cant stand it on my s-truck.

I have the same annoying squeak and since it is metal on metal, I was thinking if we put electrical tape on the parts squeaking then this may help eliminate the problem. WD40 or any other lubricant may help as well but evetually it dries out. I'll let you know if I solve the problem with this fix.

I've got the exact same problem...we found out it's the subwoofer and trunk lining, there is something that rattles when I hit the subwoofer casing like a piece of plastic broke off or something and is bouncing around in it. Also my trunk lining rubs up against the trunk and also makes a squeeking sound.
victory_red_SS 11-10-2005, 05:46 PM I too had the annoying squeak in my car. I noticed if I leaned forward or pushed back hard the squeak would stop immediately. Then I made a discovery today. I am installing the armrest and I took off the back 2 parts of the console. Then I had to head off to an appointment and I never heard a single squeak, there or back and it was 160kms.
See what happens after I put the arm rest in.
