Saturn Sky Roadster Heralds New Design Direction
Saturn Sky Roadster Heralds New Design Direction
FOR RELEASE: 2004-11-29
Detroit - Saturn today released the first visual rendering of its upcoming sports roadster and announced that the two-seater will carry the name Sky.
The rear-wheel drive Sky will showcase new design cues that will appear across Saturn’s future products as the brand renews and extends its portfolio over the next 24 months
The Sky is scheduled for public debut in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show in January. It will arrive at Saturn retailers in early 2006.
“The new form vocabulary of Saturn has been influenced by GM’s design talent from around the globe,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Design. “Taut, controlled lines combine with harmonious and fluid surfacing to create a technical and dynamic feel.”
The Sky will be built at GM’s Wilmington, Del., assembly plant. It borrows its name from a Saturn concept that was shown in 2002, but there is no design link between the two vehicles.

yup, i was dyin' for a solstice, but then they're coming out with this, so i'll be waiting for a redline version of the SKY (as long as they produce one) to compliment my redline ION! FWD, RWD, and then i'll have to get the redline VUE for AWD!!!! if only i had the cash!

I'm sure in time to come there will be a Solstice version available with a super- or turbo- charged ecotec, possibly the 240hp 2.2L shown in the concept. This will maintain light weight and neutral handling, as well as provide some serious go for a light car.

Yes it would definitely make sense for GM to further utilize it's economies of scale with the 2.0L S/C by putting it in the Solstice. However I wonder about the aftermarket; the kappa is a totally different architecture and I'm assuming the engine will be mounted longitudinally. I guess this will only really effect bolt on compatibility between the two, and devolopement of the internals, heads, and f/i system improvents would be complemented by the Solstice. I dunno, I guess we'll see, personally I think the Solstice will be great, and possibly the hit that GM needs right now.
I liked the solstice until i saw the sky. I really don't like saturn but look at the solstice and the sky and everything on the sky looks better from the interior to the more aggressive exterior. My suggestion for anyone who gets one take off all the badges and tell everyone it's european.
