swappin auto to stick

hey guys...i recently swapped my civic to a 5speed..took a little bit of research and work..relativly easy...i have a 06 ss auto...and i went to the dealer to get all the diagrams of a 5 speed cobalt...and it doesnt look that hard at all...just the wiring for the tcm...and the ecu..not quite sure if you can just get the 5 speed harness..and all the cobalts have the same ecu's i guess there all just tuned at the factory for the car model..5 speed or not..an i found out that the 2.4 and 2.2 use the same transmission..and they use sabb transmissions...the ss/sc is completly different...so im wonderin if i can find any base model cobalt thats smashed and just get a 2.2 5 speed tranny and go that route...im just pricing stuff out..im definatly going to attempt this...any info would be great guys...

I'm pretty sure that your dealer will void your warranty for doing this. You might consider trading in if it's THAT necessary for you to have a manual. After the final cost to you is tabulated, you won't be that much more out of pocket than a transmission swap and you'll still have the warranty

it was a major pain in the ass finding my 2.4L 5spd, I almost went down this route myself...
I had sales people tell me: "you WANT a manual on purpose?!? Why?!"

How much did it cost, how hard was it to do to your civic?

New transaxle at this site: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...06&catalogid=1

Another thing to consider is that if you plan to mod your engine you may want the SC transaxle with the LSD.

I want to add the LSD to my car. It sucks that by the time I pay almost $1000 for the unit, if I can't install it myself (which I plan to do) installation costs so much that I'd be better off buying a whole new transaxle ($1905) with it already installed.
If I do that I'll have my stock T/A for sale, 14K miles.

it only took 1 day to do the civic...and another day of tuning and bleeding and little stuff....very easy in my case..except for the first drive down the road and hit 3rd gear and bammm grind....syncro shot...niceee drove it like that for a month got a good tranny that sat for a long time...take it out and put another one in...then it dont go in gear...take it out again check everything put it back...still dont go in gear..PISSED...so i say screw it power shift it....all of a sudden few days later clutch starts workin right and goes into gear...and day by day it got really smooth...and then it was perfect...and i used royal purple syncromesh....and price wise was like 500-700 bucks... all stock stuff and junkyard stuff

i just really need to know if i can order the flywheel and clutch kit...for either the 2.2 or 2.4..because they are the same so i can just use any one right?? and just wonderin if i need the whole pedal assembly...and if there is already a whole in the floor for it all...and hardest part is cancelin the tcm and wiring....

the 2.2 and 2.4 both use the f23 transmission and there are no variances between the two to my knowledge so you should be able to work with any f23 tranny

Doing a swap on a civic, and doing one on this car, is like apples to oranges.

Your research is incorrect in a couple areas:

1) The 2.2 and 2.4 DO NOT have SAAB transmissions. You're backwards. The 2.2 and the 2.4 have Getrag transmissions and the SS/SC has the SAAB transmission from FGP (Fiat-GM Powertrain).

2) The 2.2 tranny and 2.4 tranny are slightly different, the 2.4 has a different final drive. I'd try and stick with the 2.4 manual if you could.

My 2 cents? Spend the money you'd spend on this on forced induction or some really nice appearance mods. Have your car tuned so the auto tranny is more to your liking and you likely won't mind.

The enjoyment factor between an auto and a 5 speed isn't THAT great to spend the money or time on a brand new, warrantied car.

Outside of that - look on here, craigs list, ebay, whatever for someone that will trade you straight up auto for 5 speed. I'm sure there's somebody that would be willing to do this, for whatever reason.

The absolute *BEST* idea I can give you? Use the money to dig your ass out of debt. If you have multiple cars piled on this loan, you probably have a garbage ass interest rate - any money you can help pay that **** down will be money saved down the road.

We have addressed this issue in the past. The problem is cost. It is actually cheaper to just trade your existing car for one that has a manual trans. It make no sense financially to take apart a warranteed car when for less money you can trade it for another warranteed car.

And all Cobalts do NOT have the same ECM. In fact, each engine type uses a different model computer.

well i was at gm and he told me all the computers were the same...just programed to the car at the factory...and he told me right from the computer that there both sabb transmissions...and anyways im still going to attempt it an im sick of hearing trade it in...how bout some help full information...like some of the wiring i need to do...thats my basic concern everything else is pretty simple....im going to find a smashed base model and use the 2.2 tranny...get the linkeages...get aftermarket clutch kit and flywheel...short shifter...grab the pedals...and get the master and slave all new from gm cuz i get discount...and the rest is pretty much if i can use the stock axles on the 5 speed tranny...and wiring....not gettin rid of the car i cant... simple..so if you dont have any info for me dont bother....

No need to get upset. I was sharing a very helpful and true piece of advice with you.

To my knowledge no one on this board has done the swap. Besides needing the obvious hard parts, you are probably going to need reflashes for both your ECM and BCM. The ECM for certain has a software selectable switch via Tech2 that tells the car if its a manual or automatic, and what tire size it has. At least on the L61 program it does. On your LE5 it will be a little different.

I assure you each different engine has a different kind of computer. Read this thread:
