2008-2009 Reliability Concerns

Hi guys,

I currently looking at the possibility of trading in my '07 SS/SC for a '09 SS Sedan. The reason for the Sedan is that my wife and I welcomed a new little boy into the world in October and the Cobalt has become a very garage only car. I use it to and from work and that's about it. We are hoping that with a sedan we could rest the '02 Vue V6 a little more (125,000 kms).

Anyways, my whole point for posting this is to find how how reliable a car the new SS's are. Any big issues that I should be looking out for? Anything that I would miss from my SC (apart to only having two doors)?

Any advice/thoughts would be appreciated as I have an appointment with a dealer this evening.

Thanks!

I've heard that the rear brakes wil lget grooves due to some metal touching the rotor, but not sure if thats only the 08 model SS. So far I haven't had any serious problems with my 09 SS sedan. I love it. It is a quick little 4 door . I DO have paint chipped above the weather strips on both the driver and passenger front doors. Looks like the door collides with the frame. nothing alittle touch up paint won't fix. But look for that when buying it.

As far as rear brakes go. Once they score bad enough GM will resurface under warranty. Got mine resurfaced 3k miles ago, and barely any "grooviness" at all. You will more than likely have a "seap" of oil at the camshaft sensor. GM has told me numerous times its normal, of course its not, but its very un-noticeable. Your MAP hose may rub the fan shroud...simple reroute of line. I think the CP bolt is fixed in the 09, but I never had a problem in my 08 coupe (knock on wood). The front rotors are corrected in the 09's too. I believe thats all of the wide spectrum problems that have occured. I know that besides a few BS cel codes that were easily corrected, the camshaft seap, the rear rotors, and the hose rubbing (hose rubbing lol), I have been fairly happy with the TC. Good luck on future ownership.

Other then those few issues.... "You can still drive the car with everyone" Don't worry about it, this car will be no more or less reliable..

then a honda, toyota, etc.....

Considering how cheap these cars are.. it's a steal for what you get

edit:

Since you got a family now.. don't forget the added bonus of TC, ESC and Side Airbags :P

I hundred percent agree. I love my SS/SC and have had no issues with it.

Lol, at the "family" options. I'll make sure to use these if the wife changes her mind! Plus, I don't think she knows that my current car has side airbags...

Thanks to all for your thoughts!

I haven't had any issues on my '09 sedan, so far 11k miles and still going strong (knock on wood), and I love having the extra 2 doors, lol

"Funny" story. So I go to the dealer I have appointment tonight after work. I get there and they have a Bright Yellow SS Coupe waiting there. Go inside to meet the saleswoman. Seems very nice.

She takes me outside to see the car and as we are walking towards the car I remind her that I'm looking for a sedan. She says that she does recall but they don't currently have a sedan in stock. I ask if they know of where they can get one. She says, oh yeah, no problem. We'll check as soon as we are done out here. She proceeds to unlock the car and let me have a look at it. After asking her a few basic questions, I realize she knows nothing about these cars (big surprise - and no, not because she's a woman, just because she is a Chevy salesperson).

After I've looked a bit she says that maybe we should go in and check on availability. So we go back inside to her desk. She tells me there is only one in the city and it's at the other dealership I'm getting a quote from (I've been very upfront with both dealerships that I'm getting quotes from both of them) but not to worry, they have dealerships outside of the city they deal with frequently on things like this. She then proceeds to tell me that I should go to my appointment with the other dealership tomorrow and call her as soon as I know what price they are offering for trade in and sale. I then ask her if her used car department is going to look at my car, to which she says, "No, they'll check it out when you come back from the other dealership." So I again ask her if she's going to give me a price and she says it doesn't matter because she'll beat whatever they offer. She also says there is no point going for a test drive since I don't want a coupe. So in total, I spent fifteen minutes gaining absolutely no information from her. Just to be clear, I'm a 30 year old guy, so it's not like I look like some young punk coming in for a joy ride.

Is it just me or is this pretty screwed up? Instead of working for my business and telling me that she will give me such a good deal that I won't even want to go to the other dealership, she wants the other dealership to do all the work and then she's going to beat it??? Jesus, I knew that some sales people were lazy, but what the hell? I was even clear with her in my initial communications that I wasn't interested in dealing like that.

Hopefully the other dealership (I actually bought my current SS/SC there) is willing to work for my business...

As far as reliability, I have almost 7500 on the clock (KMs) and I've had no mechanical trouble. Only two issues I need to have addressed is the paint on the lower inner portion of the doors (spotted, maybe rubbing off, they said they'll fix it for free) and I think my door striker is messed, I get a clack sound over hard bumps or corners with bumps.
