To be more precise it is the mechanical fuel pump for the direct injection.

To be even more precise, it is a part inside the mechanical fuel pump...just kidding!

Another noise you will hear is, (and yes its normal) After you shut the car off anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds later you'll hear a faint whine then you'll hear the electronic throttle blade rehome itself. (you will hear the blade open and slap shut) Its normal with drive by wire throttles.

I'm definately glad I was sitting beside a newer Porsche Turbo in traffic yesterday and had a chance to hear this ticking everyone is talking about...........it's not so bad, i had my windows all the way down and could hear it clearly..........how come soo many ppl complain about it??

badbaltguy 08-27-2008 02:26 PM

completely weirdly normal....

yes, this is a topic for many people, and this needs to spread out through all of us in the club of the 08 T/C. the clicking is from the D/I, but also because of the way the Eco 2.0 is timed, keep in mind, it has variable valve timing..... keep in mind, your car is new, keep in mind, it has one hell of a dangerously fast setup, so don't overdo your first 6,000 miles. minimum. also, if you watch youtube clips of these cars, you will notice that every one of these things clicks louder than the other, or some quieter.... because some of these guys are pounding these cars to death on the first few miles, and they are killing them. oh well, their problem. but yes, just take it easy, and read up on the timing, (variable valve timing) and some different computer setups for your D/I... shoudl quiet it down a lot. ight,?

You have no idea what you're talking about. :nono:

Smallywood 09-10-2008 09:29 PM

Might be the exhaust ticking too... SS/SC did it terrible prior to changing it out too...

ss_racer44 09-16-2008 05:38 PM

i drove mine off the lot yesterday. yeah it ticks, but not loud at all. i figured it had something to do w/ the way it was built since it was ticking with only 15 miles.

cobaltarrivalblue05 10-09-2008 12:38 AM

I heard the clicking on the HHR SS and wondered about. But I knew in my head that is was something with the direct injection. The new traverse 3.6 v-6 does the same thing.

SuperchargedSS 11-06-2008 02:09 PM

Its not loud at all. And there's some questionable at best info in here ..

ReddieSetGo 11-08-2008 10:25 AM

my 2009 ss/tc cobalt

I Recently Bought A 2009 Ss Turbo Cobalt And It Keeps Being In The Shop, First Time I Had My Wire Harneses Burn't Threw, Then Twice My Oxygen Sensor Messed Up, And Once Reduced Engine Power Came On. Have Any Of You Had These Problems With Ur Cobalt?

SuperchargedSS 11-19-2008 08:56 AM

Nope... she's runnin' clean and mean.

ogc 11-25-2008 11:27 AM

So just to confirm, this ticking noise we are all referring to is the one that happens about once every second or two seconds?

JPizzle 11-25-2008 11:31 AM

Yes.

ericgt79 11-25-2008 11:33 AM

when are people gonna get over direct injection? wait till they hear the sucking sound the CAI makes when they install it specially at start up...sounds like a bear trying to get out from under the hood

Its just a weird noise... haha, im over it as long as its normal, I just didnt know if it was the the actual injector ticking everyone was referring to or the once every second ticking.

Tomtwtwtw 11-25-2008 11:58 AM

It's new to a ton of people, but yeah, there are two distinct ticking sounds...injector is the very rapid ticking, and the secondary fuel pump is the one that sounds like a metronome. It's all good, though.

:twothumbs

harryresh 01-05-2009 04:32 PM

cobaltss86 04-25-2009 12:54 AM

whats up evil its me from the game

metroplex 05-02-2009 05:06 PM

I made a baseline recording of the engine compartment - it sounds like 300 different clocks working at the same time. LOL.

The engine/fuel sound reminds me of the "C" Crusher weapon in Contra III: Alien Wars for the SNES.

JiggaChillan 05-18-2009 12:28 PM

I knew about the injector ticking sound but was just introduced to the fuel pump ticking sound yesterday after a few hard runs at the track...hadn't really heard it (or noticed it maybe) until yesterday... I will admit I was quite worried about it 'cuz I hadn't noticed it before... =)

Thanks for the info guys!

hucks1987 06-03-2009 07:30 PM

LOL i didnt know what it was until that clip on top of it broke and i had to get it fixed.
