factory oil filter question
factory oil filter question
I recently puchased my 09 TC sedan with just under 3,000 miles and was wondering if there is any way to tell if the oil has been serviced already, such as the factory color of the oil filter etc.
btw, I love this car, so much fun to drive.
Thanks.

nope not really, what does the Oil Life say on the DIC?
unless the dealer has record of it being done in the service records

Stock oil filter gasket is green, not red. 80% oil life: it has not been changed. Gm's oil life monitor takes into account the way youve been driving. If you've been ******* on it for 5k miles you'll be at about 10-20%.

Well then, I will happily retract that part of my statement.
That might just be b/s our service writers tell the customers. However, If I am not mistaken, GM recommends oil changes every 5000-7000 miles depending on if you use dexOS or not, and also driving habits.

With the Engine Oil Life System, as has been indicated by other posters, the system will display "CHANGE OIL SOON" when the oil life has been diminished. Your vehicle's manual indicates that "it is possible that, if driving under the best conditions, the oil life system might not indicate that an oil change is necessary for over a year" but recommends that oil and filter be changed out at least once a year. If the system were to ever be accidentally reset, the recommendation is to get a change done at 3,000 miles since the last change.
To reset the system when you do change your oil:
1. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN, with the engine off.
2. Press the information and reset buttons on the
Driver Information Center (DIC) at the same
time to enter the personalization menu. See DIC
Vehicle Personalization on page 3-52.
3. Press the information button to scroll through the
available personalization menu modes until the
DIC display shows OIL-LIFE RESET.
4. Press and hold the reset button until the DIC
display shows ACKNOWLEDGED. This will tell you
the system has been reset.
5. Turn the key to LOCK/OFF.
If the CHANGE OIL SOON message comes back on
when the vehicle is started, the engine oil life system
has not reset. Repeat the reset procedure.
I hope this is helpful for you,

the OLM takes into account the following.
time
temperature
oil pressure
rpm (more or less to monitor if your aggressive driving or not.)
and a few other variables to get your estimated oil life remaining.

I have observed the fram filter to collapse on itself when going over mileage;
I never wait till the oil life monitor hits zero ~ I generally have it changed by about 40%
I'd wager that the filter collapsing on itself is purely due to the fact that it's been in service beyond the duration it should have been used...
the local auto parts chain trys to sell up the wix filters ~ because wix has replaced their house brand ~ but I'd rather buy a product that's been proven to be decent, rather than save a couple bucks over the span of a year...
and iirc every single brand has tests showing issues... to the best of my knowledge, the delco fintlers are all purolator filters ~ just relabled ~ and that the purolator filters are generally accepted as the best line on the market...
I'd have to drive for about an hour to the closest auto parts store which sells purolators... so that's why I don't run them.
just my thoughts.

I have used Mobil 1 everything in all my cars. Reading through oil threads still as I might switch for the Coblat. Recent thing I read said, I think, was Havoline was one of the better ones if you drive aggressively.
