First oil change

I picked my car up new just last week. I was thinking of doing the first oil change early, around 1500 - 2000 miles. I figure during the engine break-in there's more than normal wear for those first thousand or so miles and replacing the filter and oil early for the first change my help the engine out in the long term. I plan on keeping this car a long time. Any thoughts?

i cant see it making any difference cause i changed my oil at like 3500, 4000 miles and the oil barely looked dirty since my car was new and nothing was really dirty

I changed mine the first time at around 1500 miles for the same reasons you said. 23,000 miles now and it doesn't use a drop.

I did my first oil change at 5000 miles although GM says you don't have to do an early change. An early first oil change isn't likely to add any longevity to the life of your engine, but there is some piece of mind that comes along with it. I would say that 1500 might be a bit too early, my engine didn't really feel loosened up and broken in until around 4000 miles. Modern engines probably don't put out a considerable amount of wear metals during break in and most drivers aren't going to even put a dent in the additive package in Mobil1 within a couple thousand miles.

Heh, piece of mind, exactly. It just seems right. I did it with my wife's Jeep too @ 2,000 miles. I think I'll do the oil change somewhere between 1500 and 2500. Thanks guys

I did mine at about 1k miles, then again at 5k miles. Peace of mind helps a lot in the long run. That and it's my first performance car, soooo...

If that's what you want to do; certainly not going to hurt anything. They handle the initial engine run-in, before shipping to Lordstown assembly plant. Not like the old days of slamming them together, filling 'em up and sending them out the door.

Hmm, I heard BMW handles their engines the same way. So does this mean the break-in period (500 miles) isn't necessary? The whole don't rev high, keep the RPMs variable when cruising, etc.. Not that it matters, I'll break my first 500 miles tomorrow on my way home from work

Yeah, that's one of the first things I checked when I brought her home. I went over all my fluids. Except power steering, I can't seem to find it, but admittedly, I haven't looked hard.

It is electronic assisted power steering, no fluid

I'll probably be doing mine about 2000 miles or so, but only because the car will be a year old this November and the manual says to follow the OLM, but don't go longer than a year.

Why don't they update the manual? Just hedging their bets maybe.

I followed the manual's instructions for varying engine rpms and light braking for the 500-mile break-in period, and changed the oil and filter at 582 miles.

I appreciate all the myth debunkers, but I have no problem sprinkling a little holy water on it now and then and doing a long-engine-life dance. Still, I don't understand how people can be so superstitious about some of their mechanical contrivances.

I've seen it mentioned before that although the engine may be broken-in at the factory, that other drivetrain components benefit from going through the break-in procedure. I do recall it being stated in the manual that an elaborate break-in procedure isn't need but you can follow their guidelines if you want to get the longest life out of your car. Being my first brand new car, I followed the procedure for piece of mind.
