Gas Mileage

My 08 TC only gets an avg 23mi per gallon. I try to baby it by not going over 2300 rpm and barely going into boost, it still doesn't get the mileage I want. I was looking to get at least high 20's. What are you guys getting? Could I have something wrong?

is that city or highway?

If that's city then that's fine

On my GTI, unless I am highway driving only, I usually hover around 22-24 NO MATTER how I drive. ***** to the wall, or like a grandpa. Always about the same.

Make sure you're looking at the INSTANT fuel economy readout on your dash. There is an INSTANT and an AVERAGE. (Just thought it could be the problem)

Otherwise just cruise man, you won't always have epic gas mileage, there are too many factors: hills, tire pressure, speed, rpm, how much extra weight is in the car, weather, etc.

So far, my average is about 27, but I've been driving the Cobalt in a far-suburban/rural area so I don't have much stop-and-go to lower the mileage.

I do more in town driving than highway. I was just a little worried. Hopefully it will get better in the spring. I was just reading that the SC gets like 27-30 mpg and I thought our cars should get the same. They couold be mixing in highway avg with that number.

I average about 23 - 24 in colder weather and 26 - 28 in warmer weather. It is pretty normal on any car to have fluctuations like that but it is more noticable on FI cars. If you do more highway driving you may be able to average closer to 30 MPG in the warmer months. If you do mostly city driving don't expect to see much above 25 MPG.

Another thing to consider is mileage on the car. My mileage didn't start getting better until I had about 10K miles on the car, not to mention the engine didn't really wake up until then either.

Same for me.

I've also been experimenting with the instant readout and gear selection. Like cruising at 40 for example. 3rd or 4th could really be used. They get nearly the same gas mileage at that speed but 3rd might have the edge. With the higher rpm it takes less pedal (therefore engine) effort to go up hills etc.

Something to ponder anyway. I'm not that **** about saving gas myself. Just curious about things.

Part of this has to do with DFCO (deacceleration fuel cut off). On the SS/SC cobalts I know DFCO is set up to activate at 36 MPH + 1500 RPM and shut off at 18 MPH or 1250 RPM. In 3rd gear once DFCO is active it takes longer to drop to the shut off RPM than in 4th gear. Overall gas useage should be a bit lower at 40 in 4th gear except if you are going up and down alot of hills, in that case it is probably better to stay in third.

when your getting 15MPG come talk to me cause that's what I'm getting, i drive 99% stop and go traffic and do a fair bit of idling which kills my MPG.

LOL, I'm right there with you man. Between 15-17mpg is all I get on average. I gotta drive about 10 miles to work each day, but I have to stop at like 4 stop signs and like 10 stop lights, it sucks, but I aint complaining. My Mustang gets like 10mpg, LOL.

HAHA man I get an average of like 21-22mpg. I do primarily local driving and I like to get on it, not all the time, but a good amount. If I was doing more highway driving Im sure Id be able to get up to 23-25. I think youre normal right where you are, unless you do nothing but highway driving.

The reason I got a small car was because my Avalanche was getting like 13-15 so Im happy with 21! Plus I can either take the 21 or drive my vette which gets about 7-8mpg and cant go over 70 for extended periods hahaha...... 3.70gears + No OD = Bad MPG and lots of City driving!

lol i am lucky, only 5 mins to work, about the same amount of stop signs and traffic lights but the one street when going the right direction they all go green at the same time to keep traffic flowing on certain downtown one-way streets. I've been tryin to cut the idling down but when it's below freezing lol it's kinda hard. It will be better come summer and I hopefully can get above 20MPG

i get around 22 city/highway a lot of stop and go on the highway. I do have a ? see if any one can enlighten me, i was thinking since our cars are tuned to produce 260 all the time wouldnt that effect the variation between winter and summer millage i sapose it would only matter if u constantly drove in boost but im sure it will decrease the variation some what. My explorer would get 8 MPG in the winter and 16 in the summer. Sadly when i bought the car it was starting to get cold but even when its 0 i don't notice too much of a difference in millage its there but nothing compare to other cars i have had.

More RPMS will cause more pumping losses. I like to keep the rpms as low as possible.

I only drive about 5 miles to work in the city and that's the majority of my city driving, so long as I can keep my foot off the floor I average about 22-23 city and so far 30-31 on the highway. These cars are rated at 22/30 from the factory with an average of 25-26 in mixed driving and I've seen nearly identical numbers so far after 900 miles on the ODO.

29 in 60/40 (hwy/cty) driving. Averaged 31 on a trip from Florida to NC/TN/KY and back, with several passes across Tail of the Dragon and other spirited drives. Florida has exclusively ultramegacraptastic Ethanol blended fuel, which seems to have a negative impact on economy. Don't know how it is everywhere else.....

Same in Missouri. They passed a law like 2 years ago that states that all gasoline must contain 10% ethanol unless ethanol costs more than the price of the gasoline. Therefore, all our gasoline contains 10% ethanol.
