iirc there should be a small compartment at the bottom of the steering wheel column
pull the cover/clip off and look for a small button and press it while pulling on your car key
that should get your key out
unless im missing something here

That trick doesn't work in manual cars, at least it didn't for me. The ignition has an internal issue

That happened to me last month. To it to the dealer next day and replaced it under warranty. The only recall they found was for the steering that was it.

The issue is the cover that holds the springs against the tumblers is loose. There is a groove in the ignition switch housing. When you turn the key the pressure of the spring pushes the cover off and the springs fall out causing the key to stay in the ignition. took mine out and pressed the tabs on the cover in to tighten it and it hasn't happened since. that was 2weeks ago. Planning on taking it in soon for the recall though.

Same thing happened to me in the fall. Dealer told me the same thing. They just repaired it and i was on my way. But I am going to go and get the recall done anyway. Don't know how long their fix will last.

It happened at the worst time for me. Coming back from your lunch break and not being able to shut off your car. Then having to go and tell your boss that your car wont shut off and you have to take your car to the dealer.

happened to me two months ago. There is a dealership right across from my job. I pulled it into the service bay and stalled out the car. ALL the mechanics looked at me like i was a tool. I told the service guy what was wrong, he asked for my keys. the minute he asked he had a"that was a dumb question" look on his face. But it was fixed within a half hour :-)

Got to work and had to stall the car. spent lunch taking column apart to pull switch and get my key out. didn't want anyone to take the car. Although all my coworkers say "who would steal a cobalt."

Cause it is quick and easy. If my car was an automatic I probably would have.
