Hit object on highway, intercooler asploded
Hit object on highway, intercooler asploded
So last Friday night I was driving down I-75 through Lima, Oh. I struck a large object in the left lane which I later found out to be a chunk of tire from a flatbed truck. Destroyed my front bumper, blew out both IC endtanks, pushed in the radiator, and tore off the back bumper. $4302 in damages. No pics because it was late and I was 150 miles from home. My poor baby =(
Anyway, I am concerned that the turbo may have sucked up chunks of plastic from the endtank. Is this a justifiable concern? Has anyone had a similar situation and can put my mind at ease?

Yeah but it could have been worse. It was dark out and I didn't see it until the last second, fortunately I hit it smack in the middle. If it had hit one my tires I could have been airborne.
Yea I know that, but unless it sucked a piece through the air filter I don't think he really has to worry about it...
This is the first time I've had an insurance claim in my whole life so I wasn't really clear on what my options were.. I just let the insurance suggest the repair shop for me. =\
i feel your pain i hit a deer lol. But becaureful because they can screw you over or be real nice. Got my estimate then found out a bunch of other stuff was broke. But they are covering it and my aftermarket intercooler. I had to get a radiator, ac condesor, both intercoolers. and a few other things and i got 2600 before the deductable. but i just bought a griffin to replace both and am waiting on my front duraflex body kit. but i'm savin a good chunk doing it this way
I don't think he could get anything sucked into the air filter system. However, small pieces could get past the throttle plate, would not be good. Hopefully his repair shop will check it out before start-up.
I hit a raccoon when I first got my car and had similar damage, except for the front bumper. I had no ill affects from it. My damage costed $2800. Don't upgrade your intercooler unless you want problems with your warranty. Some dealers are real ***** about that sort of thing.
I bet he let off before any of that happened, closing the throttle plate. There wouldn't be anything to check, anyway. If it got sucked in, it got burned up and pushed out. It's not like his insurance company is going to pay for them to pull the head just to see if there some burned up plastic somewhere in the chamber.

As far as the upgrades, I know of a few guys that have done mods and have been rejected at the dealership because of them. I guess to be safe you need to put the stock parts back on before you take it in to a dealership.
Although it has been said that GM has people that scour these forums looking for the vehicles that have been at the racetrack, aftermarket parts installed and aftermarket tunes as well. Many dealerships have denied warranty work due to this.
Goes into Manifold and combustion chamber. Gets sent out through exhaust then back into EXHAUST IMPELLER on turbo. I had a spark plug tip grenade, sending pieces of the exhaust valve out and that tore the impeller blade off some time later. The melted metal prolly stuck to the exhaust for a while then came loose and BINGO.
It's possible to send the debris back into the turbo but not likely. Here's how:

I had a mechanic leave a rag in the intake side of one (Cummins diesel) to keep dirt out during a repair and when he hooked up the intake tube he forgot to remove it. He started it up, shut it down, then put a new turbo on it.

I don't see how an aftermarket intercooler can void you warrenty?
My cars been in for coilpacks going out and wasn't voided due the HAHN unit.
It wouldn't void you whole warranty. That's illegal. But it does give picky dealerships something to blame a part failure on.
