How do you guys get your engine compartment cleaned?
My engine compartment is starting to get a little dirty, after 2 years. How do you guys clean yours? I don't think I have ever owned a car long enough to worry about this and I know you guys up north have to have a good method for this.

before i painted everything when i cleaned it i used simple green/purple power while it was warm just covering it in that then i'd take some steel wool to it and that seemed to scrape off some of the really hard stuff then rinse. then repeat as needed. as for the black hoses and stuff tire shine really brings the shine out in that stuff. might i add there's several SEVERAL threads about this if you search lol.

keep in mind that SG is a degreaser, so if you use it you'll need to dress all your hoses and plastic back to life. If all you have is dust then try a spray bottle with a mix of water and your favorite brand of car wash soap.... it won't dry out rubber and could save you some effort. I use one of the soft-bristled brushes for cleaning wheels, it can get into all the nooks that you can't with just a rag.

Watch out for simple green, apparently a lot of diesel guys have had problems with it eating through their engine blocks and causing all sorts of issues.
And based on the fact that people already have problems with porous blocks on LNF's, I'd be very wary.
Oomf is good stuff, so is grease-off. Spray it in, rinse it off. Wipe down with rag and hit it with tire shine after it dries. Makes it look real nice, mostly if you still have all the stock piping though. All the black plastic parts shine up real nice though.

i just pop the hood open at the car wash, set it to soap and let it rip. then i do the rest of the car while it sits, then come back and get some fresh stuff on it, and repeat, then rinse

There's two types of engine cleaner by "Gunk" - a regular "engine brite" and a "foamy engine brite". The regular stuff is nasty. The foamy stuff is a lot more water soluble and seems to do a better job without stinking up everything. I warm my engine up just a little - not hot - , cover the K&N filter and fuse area with a couple rags, then have at it with the cleaner, wait a few minutes, then rinse.
I don't know if you want to do it if you have any painted bling pieces on your engine, but its pretty safe otherwise. If you want to finish up things more, use a little restorer/detailer stuff on the rubber pieces to keep them from turning that brownish surface color.

I spray simple green all over and let it sit. Then using a pressure with a high angle (40 deg) spray it off.
Be careful of stickers and the gm badge obviously. I manily stay away but for the valve cover i get kinda close
