How do you prevent steering column rattle?
I'm dropping off my car at the dealership to get it fixed via warranty. They said its warranty-able but its not a safety concern and doesn't effect safety or drivability. They said if it was customer pay they recommend not getting it fixed.
Anyway my warranty expires end of October (bumper to bumper) and the rattle is annoying. Is there a way to help me not get this rattle anymore?

2 15's 5000watt amp and some loud components should take your mind of it jk.Pull every rattling part out and put something behind it. I've seen people lay towels under the rear package tray so it doesn't rattle,so maybe try something like that.My dome light lens was rattling with the bass so I rolled up a little tape and stuck it in there and it stopped.

My column has been rattling since day one. I know getting them to fix it will take it away for awhile and then it will come back. The electric steering motor and column have plastic to metal gears and it's the backlash between them that's heard as a rattle.

I've had the electric motor, intermediate shaft and steering column assembly replaced 3 times under warranty in 10K miles (car has 14K now) and it rattles the same way every time.
I've finally gotten used to it and it doesn't seem to effect driving, whether spirited or not.
That said, I've only got 5 payments left before this thing is finally traded in because of crap like this. Really fast and only really fast is no longer worth it.

i had the rattle and before the dealership replaced the column itself they replaced the struts, sway bar end links, intermediate shaft.
I still had the rattle till they replaced the column and it's been solid now for about 5k miles.

If its covered, get it fixed..... it might end up being the intermediat shaft or column and that would be expensive if you would have to pay for it out of pocket once your out of warranty. Sounds like the service writer was just blowing you off
