HP? concerned about clutch.
HP? concerned about clutch.
I'm currently trifecta tuned at 21 psi. I am concerned my clutch might be slipping. My car has 11,000 miles on the clutch. Do you think it could be slipping at all? What horsepower do you think im making? mods in sig.
Depends on your driving. Those who aren't as good at driving manual, or who drive hard all the time, may burn through a clutch on a stock car at 10K miles. Others may go 100K + without needing a clutch on a 24 psi tune. Just depends. On my LSJ I was HPTuned on a 2.9 pulley putting down pretty good numbers (the LSJ clutch was much weaker than the LNF clutch) and when I traded the car in at 100K miles the clutch was still perfect. Of course, I have driven nothing but manual since I started learning to drive at 15 (I am 34 now, so that is 19 years), so I have the advantage of experience on my side.
I think it just luck of the draw if you got a good clutch ..... either that or some cars are making more power than others on the same tune. My clutch will slip in certain situations ..... like below 55 mph in 3rd . It only slips if i do something stupid like going wot in 4th at low rpm cause i forget or something like that. I has never slipped in 1st or 2nd gear .... and never above 4K rpm in any other gear. I am running the old trifecta ramp in tables , and was warned by Vince that it's hard on clutches ..... but I wanted it to come on quick . I have a tune with the new tables so I might flash it soon.
I've never owned an automatic and have been driving manual cars for 20 years.... my Z28 was bought new and when it was sold with 100K miles on it .... the clutch was golden . Same with my new SS/SC that was sold with 32K ....no clutch issues. Don't get me wrong ....I'm not bragging ..... but i can drive manual and am very easy on a clutch.

My clutch was fine up until last week where it slipped at the track on launch. Just over 37k on it with 31k being tuned, 61 track passes, 20 dyno pulls, and countless street beatings. Mine is making 318whp and 364wtq on a dynojet...with that being said i'm buying another stock clutch for only 160 bucks LOL.
cool thanks guys. I think im going to update my tune for 23 psi. my tuner told me he has an update for me. this is after we datalogged. he said my car was good. he just has more boost for me.

I have been running a 23 psi tune for 16K miles and haven't had any clutch slip or problems.
Clutch life has a lot to do with your driving habits and the way your tuner has the power coming in. Torque kills clutches, not HP. Also remember that timing and how much you're feeding down low and through the mid plays a role in this, not just boost.
FWIW, I had my boost coming in hard, running 1:1 E ( Plus poor driving habits trying to make the 1-2 shift a little easier ) and my clutch started slipping at 10k miles (car has been tuned since 2k miles).
After adjusting how boost/power comes on and adjusting driving habits, clutch no longer slips and is just a smidge slower 60-100, 5.2 versus 5.3
Not exactly apples to apples because I had my wife as a passenger (115lbs) but oh well.

Wow .... your making more power than me for sure ( I've never dynoed but I know I'm not making that) and I can make it slip in 3rd at low rpm if i mash it . I guess I'm going to have to go with the new boost ramp in tables from Vince.
I have a byt hyrbid tune hp/trifecta. I was tuned back last October at 11,000 miles ish, i believe nick adjusted the ramp tables and my tires like to break loose with ease..... so i say thats a winning combo for clutch life (not so much tire) lol
I have a BSR PPC tune, ZZP catted downpipe, and K&N intake and mine will slip but only under certain conditions.
If I'm rolling 40-45 and try to go WOT in 3rd it'll slip noticeably. From a 60 roll in 3rd it might a little bit, I'm not sure.
But it's like that old joke "It hurts when I do this." - Patient "So don't do that". - Doctor.
So I just don't do it. If I'm rolling 40ish I drop to 2nd and spare my clutch.
Low RPM and high load is bad.

I agree. 2,800 miles of mild/easy driving (except for dyno) and once I added trifecta 22 psi tune my clutch was slipping like a **** 5 days later. Vince didn't include that clutch warning paper for the hell of it.
Mine started slipping last fall with 5000 easy driving to work only miles on it with GMS1, I have since added the k&N intake and ZZP down pipe and its noticeably worse. I first noticed the slip using the cruise control to bump my speed from 65-80 MPH just that little bit was enough to make it slip. I have been babying the hell out of it and it seems to have settled down now to where I can drive it somewhat hard but it will slip in 3rd under 4500rpm and full boost, I am planning to tune it once the snow is gone so looks like clutch is gonna be a must now too. I have been driving manual transmission cars my whole driving life and have never taken out a clutch. I think the stock clutch is great for a fwd car but with hard driving and mods it just isn't enough guess thats the price you gotta pay though.
