^^^^^^Don't want to start anything but i have seen no reinforced airfilters get sucked through turbos. I would just hate for that to happen to someone. I have also seen a 08 Duramax diesel suck its filter in by just having a trash bag over it.

The fact remains that you gave another CobaltSS member incorrect advice about air filters that could have potentially damaged his car.

I have literally logged hundred of thousands of miles on K&N drop in filters.

Never had one single engine problem.

So i went and got a k&n filter for the time being, the dealership has placed a spat case on the filter, see how long it takes them to get it.

And for all the guys debating about k&n filters, different strokes for different folks is all i have to say. They do work, otherwise they wouldn't sell them. A lot of people who have had problems with them probably rely more on human error rather then manufacture error. I am sure scientific evidence can support an equal argument either way. But a lot has more to do with subjective opinion.

I know my dad wrecked his maf in his 03 sierra but he also oiled both sides of the element when you should only be oiling one side of the filter. Mistake's learned the hard way

My experience with K&N filters and K&N-style filters showed they have severe quality deficiencies with the polyurethane seals. The air pockets and mold defects can lead to holes developing by the mesh and gauze, which allow debris to enter the engine directly. I had one that did that, and most of the other filters just had chunks of polyurethane missing right out of the sealed bag. That's in addition to the fact that K&N filters (when properly oiled) do not filter nearly as well as paper filters. Excess oil can contaminate MAF sampling wires, but that is the least of the problems since you can clean the wires using electric contact cleaner. The problem is if you don't use enough oil - the cotton gauze is insufficient for filtration since it relies on the oil. Not enough oil = bad, too much oil = bad. The easiest solution is to stick with paper filters.

Oh i agree i like paper filters more then the k&n, but i have 17,000km on the car and the filter was almost charcoal. I needed to do something so this is a temporary fix until i can get the paper one. You know the dealership isnt in any hurry to go out of its way to help me out.

Haven't you seen what happens when you take the filter out completely, the ping pong ball hits the roof.

Does anyone have a pic of the stock 08-09 SS/TC paper air filter?

Does it look like this:

If so, then a filter that has more deeper pleats would be an improvement over stock. The stock paper filter looks very shallow, and there aren't many pleats. This causes the filter to become restrictive very quickly.

Does Purolator, Wix, or even Fram offer paper panel filters that would fit the airbox?

Yeah, that is the stock filter.

I have no listing for a Wix air filter for the SS/TC as of yet.

I have the same K&N also and love it, I could not find a good deal on ebay so I found a discount coupon here: K&N 33-2311, or you can try one of the vendors on the forum here, you can usually find a good deal that way as well. This was very easy to install and I love it

Agreed, use a cotton gause filter for a 1000 miles, have the oil analyzed and you will never use one again.

^Glad you mentioned that-an oil analysis should tell the story. I threw in a K&N a few months back and I'm confident it flows better but safer or as safe???Went back to stock for everyday use mainly because my service mgr frowned on the K&N.

Regarding OEM filters: just because a filter(or any part) "fits" doesn't mean it's ok to use

Engine oil or the air filter oil?

Honestly if you dont plan on keeping your car for over 100kmi who gives a damn about a couple thousand microns of dirt. I bought this car to have fun with it not drive it like a grandma. K&N or other high flow air filters are not going to destroy your engine.

Your service manager can take his frown to hell. Next time you go there dont even have them look at the air filter and tell them you change it yourself. It's none of their business. The drop in filters are even more "safe" than a regular cold air intake.

For starters:The service mgr didn't look at my filter, I mentioned it(my bad?-whatever). He actually didn't knock the K&N-he just didn't want to hear about it(understandably so-it's a non-stock item).
The K&N will be used at the track and for any other "scheduled romps",plus I'd like to get my money's worth out of the OEM filter.
I trapped over 105 stock(with K&N)although I have no clue how much of a factor it was.
