No-lift upshift question!

I have had my SS/TC for a week now, and have 1100 miles on it. (Took a couple road trips). Anyway, I have been practicing my no-lift shifts. I am having trouble on my 1-2 shift. About a third of the time, I hit it fine. Often though, I don't get it in 2nd. It either just doesn't go in, or a couple times I ground it. I have been driving a manual for 30 years. I hit 2-3, and 3-4 everytime. It also "pops" out the tailpipe when I hit it, which I'm sure is normal ( or isn't it?). Does anyone have any pointers for me. Is it possible I am trying to shift too fast? I want to get it down, but I don't want to tear up my tranny doing it. Any advice is appreciated!!
