Proper way to fill coolant?

Well some of you may know, i hit a porcupine which took out my intercooler and radiator about a month ago. I had ordered a radiator and installed that awhile ago, and now my ZZP Ic/CP/couplers/clamps are coming tomorrow.

So just wanted to double check about refilling the coolant, right now its basically bone dry, I did go pick up Dex-cool coolant...

Ive read that to properly fill the coolant i have to take the top hose off the radiatior and pour the coolant into the hose, then into the resovior, start the car, let it idle while pouring it into the resovior.

Should that be all? Thanks guys! So excited to drive my car tomorrow its been like a month!

I've always just put it in the over flow tank, what else would the cap be for? Always runs normal temps.

ha omg. you get everything set the way it would be if ur gonna drive it. pop the hood, open the radiator cap. go buy a the radiator filler funnels the has the correct cap for our car (Amazon.com: Lisle 24610 Spill-Free Funnel: Automotive). then just pour coolant in until it stops going into the radiator. turn the car on. let it get warm and watch the bubbles of air comming out of ur system. u may have to add more coolant as the car gets warmer. once the bubbles have stopped, plug the funnel with the tool they give you with the funnel and pull the whole thing off the radiator. put the cap on and fill the resevoir to fill line. your now set. no air in the system and you have the right amount of coolant in ur car.

You are supposed to remove the upper rad hose and fill it thru there first, then re-attach. Then top it off thru the surge tank. You then start the car and high idle it at 2k-2500 RPM for a couple mins, shut off and then re-top off thru the surge tank. Repeat the high idle and top off if needed.

Ever since I damaged my rad and refilled the coolant with new 50/50 mixed coolant, my car runs cooler. Not sure if the dealer uses more coolant then water or something but it's 100x better IMO now!

did you use deionized water?
If not, then you did it incorrectly.

Spill free funnel? This looks like overkill and unnecessary. If you don't have a steady hand just buy a $1 funnel from WalMart.

No it's not over kill the proper way after putting it in is to "bleed" or "burp" the system after the coolant is full. This funnel he is talking about attaches to the tank fill about 1/3 the way run the car allowing the fans to come on 3-4 time or until no more bubble. Did none of you do this?

It really depends on the engine. Some engines can bleed all the air out by just running with the cap open and varying the RPM. Other engines come with a bleeder bolt you can open on when the system is closed and under pressure. I was under the assumption that our engines are the prior method.

You shouldn't of used tap water, that's a no-no! They sell the Dex-Cool 50/50 mixed at the auto store

Or you can buy distilled water at the supermarket or WalMart for something like 70c a gallon.
