Swapping ECU's Can the dealer tell??
I'm going to test this out at my local dealer who lets me use all their stuff. I'll flash back to the stock file superchips copied and see if the CVN numbers of the calibration still line up. What i was told was that if a calibration is flashed to the car with anything other than a tech2 or GMmdi that the CVN numbers will be off. I was also told that the ECM keeps track of how many times it's been flashed .
Please let us know which is the way to go, more than likely I will be waiting on my tuning until I know pretty much for sure which is the way to go. I will not waste my money on the stage one tune. It is not worth nearly $1k just to have 30hp.
If that was true Trifecta wouldnt still be in business and HPtuners wouldnt have such a large market base on this website.

You can get a legit dyno tune for half the price make twice the power and retunes at any reputable shop are under 125$.

I said Buying HP tuners is a waste 700$ when you can get a real tune for 1/2 the price $350,
Then I said retunes at any reputable shop should be around 125$
Okay so i'm a little confused then. Are we on the consensus that a Tech CANNOT tell if you have a sepearte ECM. I talked with GTPprix today(who works at a dealer) and he said the equipment they use cannot tell if it has been swaped, also that the miles are stored in the bcm. So would I be okay with a seperate ECM?
Spoke with the electronics tech at a dealer today and according to him "there is no way to tell if a previous calibration was done, there are no footprints to trace. The tech 2 can only read the existing calibration file, that's it". It's just dealers trying to scare people.

I can change all my settings at will on my car so if I dont want my car to be ***** to the wall I can turn it down, then when I want to tear the tires off I can flash my full kill tune into my car. To each his own but HP Tuners is not a waste of money IMHO. I tune other peoples cars for them too so how is that a waste of money?
When exactly will this GDS "roll out"? I really want to buy a second ECM to tune, then put Stage 1 on my stock ECM. But if GDS is coming out soon, then there may not be a point if that would guarantee a voided warranty.
maybe i'm just missing something, but from what i just read about the gds, it lists the camaro and cruze and some buicks and stuff but nothing about cobalts. kinda seems like it has a whole different ecm or something, as in not something they can just make our ecms do. it says if you swap out to another ecm from the cars that use the gds then the car wont even start cuz the security codes don't match up. and people on here have started their cars with different ecms before so we know thats not happening. i'm not positive about how all that stuff works, but thats just what i got from a quick google search

im gonna be harsh because i think this is an important thing that is hard to find information on and is the first thing you should know when you get involved with an LNF. If some1 made it this blunt when i started out it would have helped
If your gonna tune this car your a MORON if you dont find a spare ECU. Find one with the option of getting your Vin in it. Performance Autowerks sells them now I believe. Google them. WELL WORTH THE MONEY Dealer CANNOT TELL. Had several services done and they always blame it on my aftermarket parts and say they will not diagnose a problem untill everything is returned to stock. Never once had a problem, and had a technician scan my ECU looking for a tune and told me "thank god you didnt do anything to the computer cause they tell us to check for that 1st thign when one of these comes in" I dont trust trifecta hidden tunes, if its on the ECU and my cars in the dealer im nervous. if the stock ECU that was never touched is at the dealer i can sleep at night. No mileage is stored on it and the date of the loaded flash is well b4 you owned the car. No worries. Best possible way to do it if you can. Oh and ALWAYS tune the NEW ecu. leave the old one. keep it in the car in the trunk. you break down, put stock ECU in, put the tuned one in a bag or whatever, call a tow truck. cars at the dealer with stock ECU in. ur safe.

They wont be able to tell, but if you bring in a grenaded car that all the OBDII readyness tests are pending on.......... it would be a pretty good indiction (to me anyway) someone had swapped the ECU recently. So, my advice would be to say you unhooked the battery to try and fix whatever was wrong, or some bullshit excuse along those lines.

On my Dashdaq, you can see the ECU take note of things like:
Number of cold starts
Miles since reset
Miles since CEL came on
Miles since last cleared CEL
etc...
(Does not keep track of total miles...)
Not trying to make people paranoid. A full reflash should clear everything and start fresh (and would be the equivalent to if you "disconnected the battery" to do or check on something).

Prove it.
Total mile data is written and stored on the BCM, not ECM as previously mentioned by Term and Stamina. I found this out because I had my ECM replaced under warranty a few months after I bought my car and had asked how mileage, oil life, trip mileage, etc. was stored.
I had a friend who popped his engine and was running the trifecta hidden tune and they couldn't find any evidence of an aftermarket tune so they replaced his engine under warranty.
