Transmission bearings shot...

Took it into the shop for bearing noise coming from my transmission, they haven't finished tearing it down yet, but its likely the bearings on the output shaft (as the sound is not gear dependent, doesn't change with engine speed, its consistent with wheel speed - and not a wheel bearing).

Anyway, the dealer said they will cover it under the drivetrain warranty - So far Hendrick here has been good about doing warranty work, even with the mods I have. I'm still nervous though, waiting for that phone call saying sorry, you have a tune, VOID! Anyway, on the bright side, I'm getting my Excedy kit installed for $100 . I said, since you are going to have it all apart anyway, I have this clutch kit I've been meaning to install......

Oh and the only rental they had left was a Cadillac CTS . So cruisin' in style until I get it back. No rental Cobalt for me!

I love the ride, but the base model with the v6 doesn't have enough power. I'd absolutely love to have a Cts-v though!

I know that this is an old post and all, but I have a HUGE question to ask!!
I have the same problem in my cobalt right now. One of the bearings inside the tranny is making a noise, and it gets louder with the wheel speed. Which bearings did you have replaced?

Hmmm...I get a similar noise / whine as I accelerate, louder as i pick up speed. (wheel bearings?) Even when at lower RPMS, I know our tranny is noisy to begin with, I may look into this. I get a grinding noise also, more prominent in 3rd gear. (downshifting coming to stops) Clutch rattle? bad syncro? Leaning towards syncro due to sometimes at the point where it goes into gear it lets out a high pitch type noise before it goes into gear. (Not loud, can't hear it from outside the car) Kind of feel like the problem just smacked me in the face after i typed it out, lol

Let us know what you find when you look in this a little further, VR09Sedan. If I can answer any recall/warranty inquiries, please let me know!

The reason why I know it's neither of the wheel bearing is because I've kiiinda tested it. I raised the car from each side, and since I don't have the G85 option, it would mean that I don't have LSD. So slowly, I put the car in 1st gear and let one wheel spin. the sound came as soon as I hit like 3-5 mph.. Both times on different sides, sounded exactly the same..

He was saying it was the output shaft bearings.

Yeah it took some getting used to, almost thought something was wrong. That is a loud clutch, especially on partial throttle.

Yeah that was the general consensus, but the dealer couldn't get the parts so he replaced the entire transmission. Which promptly blew third gear less than 30 days later, and gm voided my warranty.
