What is Better?

I have a question for you guys... Would it be better to park the car in gear or out of gear with the E-brake engaged? Would it put more strain on the tranny if its parked in gear?

You should always park a manual car in gear, because if you e-brake fails then you car could roll away. Its not gonna put any real strain on the tranny

i only put it in gear and use the e-brake if im on a decent incline/decline. otherwise i just use the e-brake.

I do both, If im on a hill i usually push in the clutch to put the weight of the car on the E-brake and have tranny as a back up.

Just imagine, a car is driving down a main road, all of a sudden, a nice lil cobalt rolls out from the hill going onto that road, and smash, no more cobalt

I used to have a civic for a beater and the one and last time I park a standard with just the e-brake I walked out of my friends house and my car was on the other side of the road over the curb and into a fence. Now E-Brake and gear everytime!

Always do both. Strain is always left on the E-break.

lol both... and not to sound like a ******** but with the amount of strain 260ft/lbs+ on your transmission instantly.. i doubt very much the partial weight of your car sitting is going to even come close to that.. if it was bad for it the auto makers wouldn't let the car park in gear

Not a 'balt story, but way back a buddy's dad did the opposite - put his AMC in gear, but no e-brake. He mustn't have gotten it in all the way or his trans was loose, but the car managed to bump out of gear. He lived two houses up from me on a 1/4 mile long 30 degree incline. Lucky for him it was winter and there was this God-awful huge snowbank to stop that missile.

Only needed a new bumper.

Use both every time. The transmission in 1st or reverse alone is more than enough to hold the car on a steep incline. Pretty much the only reason I use my parking brake is so the cables don't seize, which isnt so much of an issue on manual tranny's, but when they do seize up, they are very expensive to replace. On any sort of hill, you should also be turning your wheels to lock the car against the curb.

my ebrake is ****. Even in gear on a steep hill at my college my car still seems to drift. Whenever I get the ebrake working it only lasts for a month then its back to how it was, but I mean steep hills lol

My E-brake is terrible as well. It has to be absolutely pulled as far as it will possibly go to stop the car from rolling. If I'm on an incline and it's not all the way up, when I push in the clutch to start the car it will start rolling and then I have to pull it hard all the way to get it to stop. Moral of the story is to use both.

I hope none of you park your car with it in neutral. That's just plain dangerous. If you do, someone did not teach you correctly.
