Will a 17 inch rim fit a 08/09 SS ?

Tried doing a search and it didn't help ....

I was wondering if anyone new if a 17inch rim would fit over the brakes on the TC SS ?

I have some all seasons left over from my Mini S and if they would fit, I can save some cash.

I know I would need different rims, I just want to re-use the tires and then I can get snow tires down the road ....

I'm pretty sure a 17 will fit over the front brakes. But you should make double sure before attempting, don't trust anyones word. Its a new car... that info won't be that readily available just yet, more than likely.

test before doing it, it probably will fit diameter-wise, but offset is another matter

I've been keeping an eye on TireRack.com for some winter tire packages and they said they have not had one in their shop yet to do measurements.

I'm guessing wheel choices will be very limited because of the clearance of the Brembos. If you look at the stock wheels, they extend out to get around the Brembos.

I am hoping the bolt pattern and offset is the same as the 17" malibu/aura steal wheels. That is very wishful thinking though.

Yes, 17s are the smallest that will fit over the brakes.

Bolt pattern is definitely the same, offset should be fine but I'm not 100% on that.

Do you own an SS/TC or SS/SC? It looks like from your pics, you own an SS/SC. If this is the case, you should not be discussing what fits on an SS/TC because this car has different brake calipers (Brembos) and they are HUGE.

Unless someone has actually tried putting some other wheels on an SS/TC, I'm not sure if anyone really knows what will fit.

I don't have one, but I would gamble $20 that 17" will clear the brakes. Now, whether or not the rim/steel wheel's spokes can clean the calipers is a different question altogether.

How about lose the attitude?

I own an SS/SC. However that doesn't mean I don't know a damn thing about the TC.

17s WILL fit over the Brembro calipers. This has been discussed at length. But instead of being an ******* like yourself and simply saying "OMGWTF SEARCH BUTTON" I figured I'd help the guy out.

Glad to see the addition of the TC to the Cobalt family is bringing even MORE douchebags to the site.

I don't have an attitude about anything. I just hate for people to come on here looking for advice and thinking they can trust what they read when the people posting have no experience with the topic.

Obviously there is a great deal of concern with the Brembos and wheel clearance because it sounds like the spare doesn't even fit on the front because of the calipers.

If you had a SS/TC in front of you, you would understand the issues. Since you don't, please refrain from giving people "sound" advice.

Just because you read it somewhere else does not make it true. I have read plenty of things on this site that are not true. Speak from experience, not from what other people assumed and posted on other parts of the site.

alleycat has been on here for a while, and is VERY knowledgeable, just because she doesn't own the exact car, doesn't mean she doesn't know what she's talking about. you asked for advice, and it was given.

the spare doesn't need to fit the front because you are supposed to move a full size wheel to the front if you have a flat there and put the spare in the back. knowledge>you.

Hey, have at it. And yeah, you do have an attitude. If you're only taking advice with people that have TCs then have fun with that.

I've looked first hand in person at the TCs and I can tell you that a 17" rim with the correct offset WILL fit. There is MORE than enough clearance.

You honestly think that no one has put the Brembros on an SS/SC????? Or been serious enough about it that they would test it out????? Hence why I've looked and measured and measured again and I'm telling you a 17" will fit.

We measured it on the show car and I know I went out as soon as the production cars came out and measured again.

People around here sure do like to assume a lot of erroneous bullshit.

It sounds like you have done a lot of research and I apologize for questioning your insight into the subject.

I've just learned to be very skeptical of things that people post and I didn't want this guy to go out and buy a set of 17's and think they would fit because some 13 year old kid pretending to own a Cobalt posted.

Reading this post that has more explanation, I'd agree that a 17 could fit over the caliper. The primary issue is the offset. I think you are going to have a very limited selection of wheels that clear that offset.

I'm planning to get a set of wheels and winter tires from TireRack.com as soon as they get a car to do their fitting and get their options up on their site.

I was told by a GMPP Engineer that nothing smaller then an 18" will fit on the fronts, but that may have changed

Do you have access to someone with one of the newer GM cars....Malibu, Astra, Impala, Aura? What I would do and what I would have liked to have done at the dealer lot was to take a 17" rim from another FWD GM car, take the TC rim off, and just try gently to see what would happen, but I was NOT about to jack with a future customer's car. I do not think ANY 17" rim would fit, offset is going to be important.

It shouldn't be TOO bad with the offset, we come from the same problem with the SS/SC and 16" wheels. They fit. Barely. And the offset has to be just right.

The issue with Brembros is not exactly the SIZE of the caliper, but the shape. That's true for all models. I've seen time and time again wheels that would otherwise clear with lots of breathing room not fit because of the kind of goofy "pointed" shape of the Brembros.

That isn't very solid.

If that is the case, I might as well cancel my order because I am not going to spend $1000 on winter tires.

Was this at Mid-Ohio? That was one of the questions I wanted to ask. The Brembros would definitely be a nice addition to the road racing setup, but I don't want to race on 18" rims.

From what I measured, IIRC, 17s will clear but they're not going to leave oodles of room inside. You don't have a lot of margin of error on offset. If another factory wheel won't fit, it should be possible to buy an aftermarket wheel of the same offset and it SOULD fit.

Honestly, if I were to try anything at all it would be the 17" G5 GT wheels.

Steelies more than likely WON'T fit because of the curved in edges. It's kind of like us with 16" rims. Even OEM - Pontiac wheels fit. SAAB wheels are hit or miss.

there is roughly 45mm between the face of the hub and the outer face of the caliper (that says brembo)

thats whats really gonna limit wheel choices I think

x2...

I've been trying to get my hands on some G5 GT wheels for a while though. Those guys love their rims though. Bastards.

Ok heres the thing ppl........why does the spare tire end up being a 16inch??? If this is the case why wouldn't other 16inch rims fit??? I mean yea it is a spare tire but think hard, if their givin out a 16inch spare tire then another 16inch should fit.
